PTOM Interview: PSN Boss Talks Voice Chat & Firmware Updates

500°
253w ago - During a recent interview with PlayStation: The Official Magazine (PTOM) in the Holiday '09 issue, PSN Director Eric Lempel discusses how Firmware update features are planned and released for the PlayStation 3 and PSP consoles and touches on cross-game voice chat.

To quote: "We go about doing that in a few different ways. We do consumer research in addition to following our roadmap.

We've had a very long roadmap that we've wanted to roll out, and clearly all of them couldn't be rolled out day one when the PS3 launched. So we've been implementing these features as we go along and some of them, and some of them take longer than others."

Lempel continued: "Of course time and manpower always factor in because there aren't limitless resources. And are sometimes key features that must go out in Firmware updates. For example, you saw on September 1, we released a 120GB PS3 and we did a Firmware update, and there were some enhancements in that specifically to bring on the new hardware."

The director of the PlayStation Network further explained: "We absolutely read all the feedback that we see on our blog when we do firmware updates. We have people who look across different forums and different sites. And we also do our own testing - some very extensive testing.."

271w ago - PCWorld had the opportunity to [Register or Login to view links] Sony's Director of Network Operations Eric Lempel to get answers to several topics including PS3 Firmware Updates, NXE and Hulu.

For the complete interview see the link above, but below are some excepts from it, as follows:

When asked why Sony doesn't provide more PS3 Firmware Update details on the PlayStation Blog, Lempel stated:

"Well basically in the updates that we do on the blog, it's really to tell consumers this is what you can do today with your PS3, or in the next few days when we release a firmware update.

It isn't about diving into the tech and letting them know six months from now you're going to see a game that may have better effects in a certain area because we've put this in such and such update. That's not as digestible for the majority of consumers. It just won't work."

When asked if Microsoft's NXE debut mimicked the PS3 XMB, he stated:

"You know, I didn't really think about it that way. I mean, I saw some comparisons when it came out, but that's very interesting that you say that. You know, hey, it's great, if they like our interface and want to copy it, as long as that's legal, sure. I don't really know...
