PS3 Firmware 3.56 Update is Now Available, Details Incoming

183w ago - Update: It appears Mathieulh is [Register or Login to view links] as GFI Security's Chris Boyd has confirmed Sony wrote the ability for remote updates into its terms and conditions since at least 2006 stating the 3.56 rootkit is not new.

Just under two months since the previous PlayStation 3 system software update has passed, and today Sony has released PS3 Firmware version 3.56.

For those wondering, PS3 JailBreak and Custom Firmware users can still access PSN via the bypass methods but read the IRC log below as a "rootkit" was found in PS3 Firmware 3.56 which reportedly allows Sony to scan for PlayStation 3 Custom Firmware or any unofficial homebrew software.

PS3 Firmware Update v3.55 Arrives, Adds Security Patch

191w ago - Update: [Register or Login to view links] has confirmed that PS3 Firmware update version 3.55 blocked access to lv2 kernel "execute" access, however, if you can patch back in a method to lv1_write_htab_entry, you can re-enable this area.

Today Sony Network Operations Americas VP Eric Lempel has announced that PS3 Firmware update v3.55 has arrived and simply adds a security patch.

PS3 Firmware 3.50 Update Disables Third-Party USB Adapters

201w ago - A few days ago the PS3 Firmware 3.50 update was released, and since then many users have reported that their PlayStation 3 controller third-party USB adapters no longer function.

To quote from VG247.com (linked above): "According to a [Register or Login to view links] posted by Sony on September 21, the same day the newest firmware update went live:

"SCEA does not support continued functionality of counterfeit or unlicensed controllers in system software updates and these devices may cease to function in the future because of system software updates.

SCE and its affiliated companies disclaim all liability for any loss or damage suffered by you or any third party through the use of counterfeit or unlicensed products."

There's been no official response from Sony just yet, but we'll send a mail and see if it's working on the issue or if it has a response."
 

PS3 Firmware 3.50 Adds 3D Blu-ray Movie Support September 21

"Facebook connectivity will increase and will allow users (at least from what we can gather from the translation) to post what game they're playing on the social networking site.

Moreover, you can now report messages from the XMB which will be a much-welcomed feature for those of you who recieved spam over PSN."

• Support for Blu-ray 3D
• 'Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity' - New icon [Music]. Although this service is not yet available, the icon will be shown in this section.

204w ago - Update: Several users who updated to PS3 Firmware 3.42 have now confirmed (along with Sony [Register or Login to view links]) that Sony has indeed added 'additional security features' and patched the PS3 exploit used for PS JailBreak, PSGroove and PSFreedom as expected so it is advised you do NOT update if you plan to use them.

For those who just signed in to PlayStation Network, PS3 Firmware update 3.42 is now available to download.
