Intel's Price Cuts are Hidden Treasure to Gamers

50°
331w ago - The PC Gamer reader mail bag is still overflowing with anxious letters from readers who are feeling a little, you know, inadequate in the processor department.

Some of them want to know if they should go from AMD to Intel or Intel to AMD; some want to know if they should go from dual-core to quad-core; and in extreme cases, some want to know if they should go from single-core to multi-core.

The answer is usually tricky, as it depends on what you use your PC for (I'm assuming gaming, with maybe some audio and video flirtation on the side), what kind of videocard you have, etc. But Intel's recent price cuts - these were major cuts - have made things a lot simpler for the time being.

Here are some of the official prices, which are based on 1,000 unit quantities for large polygamist families. Intel's Core 2 Quad Q6700 plummeted from $530 down to $266, and the Core 2 Quad Q6600 dipped down to $224 from $266. The dual-core E6850 went down to $183 from $266.

You can expect to pay a bit more at retail; my personal favorite, for example, the lovely and cosmopolitan Q6700, is going for $280 at Newegg, shipped.

These prices ought to keep Intel in a holding pattern for a while, and there aren't any murmurs about major price cuts from AMD yet, so if you've been waiting...

Sumitomo Chemical to Launch Large Organic EL Panels in 2009

50°
331w ago - Sumitomo Chemical Co. said Friday that in 2009, it plans to launch the production and sales of large-screen organic electroluminescence display panels for use in televisions of 40 inches or larger.

President Hiromasa Yonekura said his company is considering forming alliances for the development of such organic panels.

EL panels are thinner than liquid display panels and consume less power.

Sumitomo Chemical is developing so-called macromolecule-type organic EL panels. Because these can be produced through an ink-jet printing process, it is possible to lower production costs and make large displays, a company spokesman said.

Gizmondo to Rise from the Dead in Winter 2008, Founder says

50°
332w ago - Not only is Gizmondo coming back, Carl Freer says you can expect to see a new version of the handheld console by the end of the year–this time without the whole defrauding investors and crashing Ferraris schtick, supposedly.

In an interview in the Gizmondo forums, Freer claimed that, "There is still incredible value in the Gizmondo. And with the enhancements we're adding... we feel it's only the beginning of where we can go with the product."

Gizmondo version 2.0 will include a new graphics chip, Windows CE 6.0 (which comes with "a lot of 'new' goodies," Freer says), and a bunch of original content to be downloaded off the gizmondo.com website. It'll be ready by Winter 2008, and the developer community can expect more announcements soon.

Left unanswered by the interview was why Freer thinks anybody is going to trust him with anything a second time around. Maybe he hasn't heard the adage: "Fool me once, your CEO gets sent to jail for three years and your company gets liquidated. Fool me twice... well, you ain't ever gonna fool me twice."

New Max Payne Movie Pics available!

50°
332w ago - Photographs from the location shoot of the new Max Payne movie have emerged online, revealing Chris O'Donnell in character for the first time.

While Mark Wahlberg is the titular character, Chris O'Donnell plays an executive tied into the big conspiracy that led to the death of Payne's family. He's seen here walking along the snowy streets of New York, either asleep, annoyed or simply caught by the camera at the wrong moment.

Thanks to Film School Rejects for the shots, and there's another shot of Wahlberg as Payne (you can see the first one here).

Max Payne: The Movie is still due sometime this year.

A few more pics can be seen at the link up top of this story!
