264w ago - At the same BMO Capital Markets' conference last week in New York where he gave an update on upcoming GTAIV DLC and Chinatown Wars, Take Two CEO Strauss Zelnick offered a glimpse further down the road. In his "Negative Approach" blog for cnet, Dave Rosenberg related these remarks from Zelnick:
The Holy Grail is taking a business, already a very large and successful business that's focused on packaged goods... and turning that into a subscription business or a semi subscription business where we have an ongoing relationship with consumers, giving them products that they want. Who's better positioned to do that than the company that has the top franchises?
It isn't much of a stretch here to start connecting the dots. The Grand Theft series definitely fits the bill as a "successful business that's focused on packaged goods," and it's also the top of their franchise properties. And though delayed, the DLC plan for GTAIV offers an ideal test run for a "semi subscription" model along the lines Zelnick suggests.
Not that they needed more incentive, but Watching World of Warcraft once again flexing its muscle with the release of the Wrath of the Lich King expansion must spur them on that much harder.
Everyone asks, "Can a console game tap into the World of Warcraft meme?" and "what...
265w ago - While speaking with Variety, Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser gave some disappointing news about the downloadable content that Xbox 360 user's were promised to come out by the end of the year.
While its still on track to be released for Microsoft exclusively, he's just not sure if we'll see it by the end of the year.
"Me: On another topic, I have to ask you about the "GTA IV" downloadable content you're doing. Do you still expect that to come out this year?"
"DH: I'm not sure. It's going well. But we don't know a date. We hope to be announcing that in the next few weeks. We're still figuring out a few things. We're more focused on quality than dates, always have been. But the development is going really good. It's shaping up to be something we're very proud of. That was our goal."
By saying "Not sure," we're 'pretty sure' that means we won't be seeing any new content until next year. Considering as we write this article, the date is November 9th – 52 days until the year ends. If they don't even have a date set and their still developing it, we're probably not seeing it till 2009.
Here is even more proof. Houser said the content of...
267w ago - We know some of you put off playing Grand Theft Auto IV when it launched earlier this year on "video game consoles" - instead, preferring to wait for the inevitable PC port.
After all, if there was any chance of some hidden hot coffee action, the PC would be platform of discovery. So you waited. And waited. And finally word came through the tubes that GTA IV would see a PC release on November 18th of this year.
Now, if listings on popular online video game retailers like Amazon and GameStop are any indication, we're hoping you circled that date on your Friends of GTA charity calendar in pencil because you may be in for a two-week delay.
We put a request out to Rockstar early this morning and have yet to hear back, leading us to believe this delay is the real deal.
267w ago - Social Media Manager Jeff Rubenstein shared the following via PS Blog:
You've probably already heard the news: this coming Monday, October 27th, there will be an update made available on the PlayStation Network to unlock the entire Trophy system for Grand Theft Auto IV on PLAYSTATION 3.
Rockstar Games asked that I share a bit more info with you.
Make sure to download and install the update before playing in order to start attaining Trophies. There will be 51 total trophies, broken down by four different levels: bronze, silver, gold and platinum - all contributing to your overall experience level on your PlayStation Network profile.
Among the 51 trophies to be released Monday, look for:
One Man Army - only those that are wily enough to survive a 6-star wanted level for a full 5 minutes will be rewarded with this one.
Dare Devil - an award for those who find and execute all of the Unique Stunt Jumps throughout Liberty City.
Chain Reaction - an Achievement for those who can pull off blowing up 10 vehicles in 10 seconds or less.
Liberty City Minute - for those that have completed the game story in less than 30 hours. As the Social Club's Story Club leaderboard can attest, this is not an easy feat.
