How Sony Can Improve the PlayStation Home Experience on PS3

250°
292w ago - So, the Home Open Beta has launched, and while it's another step in the right direction, I still find little to no reason to fire it up.

Here are some ideas that Sony should be considering, if they already aren't.

More Character Customization

What's there already is good, but it's next to impossible to create a character that looks even remotely like me, especially in the face area.

The sad thing is that the underpowered Wii can make a recognizable Mii of me, as can in-game editors in The Godfather and, what came closest so far, Fight Night Round 2. In fact, Sony should look closely at the Fight Night character creation, because I'm convinced that it can do anything.

In addition to this, allow our Home avatars to be used outside of Home - maybe in games like BUZZ! Quiz TV, or sports games, etc. just like the Xbox 360 avatars and Wii's Miis.

The limited options that currently exist for PSN account icons are ridiculous. There are 23 pages or so, most of which are crap. Allow us to set our PSN avatar to a headshot of our Home avatar, and this would solve that problem in one fell swoop.

Complete XMB Functionality

The XMB is fast, sleek, and simple and really, pretty bloody awesome. But Home is supposed to be this new...

New XBox Experience Causing HDMI Sound Loss Issues

50°
296w ago - According to a thread at the AVForums, several Xbox 360 users are losing all sound after upgrading to the New Xbox Experience.

Evidently the problem only appears in HDMI-connected systems, but there has been one report of someone having the same problem using a SCART connector. Fortunately, there seems to be a fix.

• Turn off the Xbox 360.
• Remove the hard drive.
• Turn on the Xbox 360.
• When the Dashboard loads, put the hard drive back.

Apparently, the fix is only temporary. If you turn of the Xbox, you will have to receive the process.

Yellow Dog Linux v6.1 out for PS3 with Advanced Cell Experience

400°
296w ago - The new version of YDL was released. I think the most important new feature is that you can now use the memory of the RSX-GPU as a swap partition.

You should notice a great increase of speed while using linux.

The free version can be downloaded in four weeks. For now only owners of YDL.net Enhanced Accounts can access YDL 6.1.

Press Release: AUSTIN, Texas - 19 November 2008 - From the show floor of SuperComputing 2008, booth #1915, Fixstars today released Yellow Dog Linux v6.1 for Apple G4/G5, Sony PLAYSTATION3, PowerStation, and IBM Power Systems. Built upon the CentOS foundation, a derivative of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, YDL v6.1 offers several end-user and development tool improvements over the previous v6.0.

"This marks the final release of Yellow Dog Linux by Terra Soft and the first by Fixstars," states Owen Stampflee, Fixstars Solutions' Director of Engineering, "In my five years with Terra Soft we have made incremental improvements with each release, always pressing for a higher quality end user experience.

In some updates, we focus on the desktop; in others the development environment. With version 6.1 we have accomplished a unique blend of both. I am personally proud of what we offer with this version of Yellow Dog, and believe our users will enjoy it as...

New XBox Experience Update Says Hello with RRoD Reports

50°
296w ago - Looks like the New Xbox Experience dashboard update is experiencing some not-so-new Xbox woes. November 19: launch day for the NXE update. Not 24 hours after it went live, complaints
are already piling up.

Various forums online (such as the one linked above) have threads and threads of people reporting anything from connection freezes, slow downs, lock ups, broken TV connections, and so many other different numerical errors that, if all of them were strung together, could potentially measure all the way from Earth to the moon (and back).

There are even reports of brickage - yes, the famed red ring of death is back. Some say it's limited to modded consoles only (no surprise there) but other untainted units seem to be affected by the same problem too.

We've yet to hear any official response from Major Nelson or any of the Microsoft staff. Some say the slow downs are caused by the simple fact of surging traffic accessing XBL, but the other problems are still unaccounted for.

If you are experiencing any problems with the NXE update, you might want to contact customer service (good luck!) or check forums to ask around if anyone's getting the same problem as you.
