Publishers Unhappy with Policy Shift & PSN Download Charges

350°
286w ago - According to MTV Multiplayer (linked above), Sony's previously un-reported new "PlayStation Network Bandwidth Fee" is forcing publishers to think twice about what content they offer to PS3 gamers for download.

To quote: Until October 1 2008, video game publishers who wanted to offer downloadable content on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 didn't have to worry about getting a bill from Microsoft and Sony.

The million-plus downloads that a popular demo or map pack might receive could delight gamers, but rack up some expensive bandwidth costs. No problem: the publishers, who already pay a licensing fee to get their games on the two big platforms, could count on the platform holders – Microsoft and Sony – to pay the cost of piping that digital content to gamers.

That situation changed with the PS3 on October 1 of last year, when Sony implemented a 16 cents per Gigabyte fee to publishers for paid and free downloadable content, according to publishing sources familiar with Sony's policy.

Game publishers are not happy about it.

MTV Multiplayer has verified that a letter sent to publishers last fall detailed the policy. It applies a 16-cent charge to every Gigabyte of content downloaded from the PS3's PSN online store. For free content, like demos, those charges...

Street Fighter IV Leaked & Available to Download for XBox 360

292w ago - Piracy is a very big problem in the gaming industry, primarily affecting the PC platform. As such, a lot of companies choose to release new titles exclusively to consoles, ignoring the PC platform for fear that they might lose a lot of money.

While the [Register or Login to view links] and other developers and publishers of video games are backing up the PC, it seems that they are fighting with the proverbial windmills.

But let's not forget that consoles do encounter problems, at least the Xbox 360, as we have recently learned that Capcom's upcoming Street Fighter IV title has already been leaked and is up for anyone to download and play on their modified Xbox 360 console.

Torrent sites are being assaulted by players eager to test out this long awaited title, as there are still quite a lot of days until the retail release of the game in Japan, February 12, North America, February 19, and last but not least, Europe on February 20. Also, let's not forget that the PC version of the game still doesn't have a concrete release date, as Capcom wants people to buy the title for the consoles first.

Street Fighter IV is the latest iteration in the long running fighting game franchise owned by Japanese company...

Battle Fantasia May See US Release as PSN Download for PS3

50°
292w ago - Arc System Works' quirky 2D fighter, Battle Fantasia, saw a US release last year as an Xbox 360 exclusive, although the game is available on PS3 in the rest of the world (Europe and Japan).

However, it looks as though American PS3 owners may be getting a new chance at playing the game.

Siliconera (linked above) discovered a recently-appended entry to the ESRB listing for Battle Fantasia. The ratings board has the game covered on PS3 and "PSN via PS3."

To quote: It looks like there is a chance the PS3 version of Battle Fantasia could come to North America in a rather peculiar way. The ESRB re-rated Battle Fantasia as an Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and "PSN via PS3 game".

So, Aksys is planning to distribute a retail PS3 game as a PlayStation Network download? We've seen this happen before with games like Warhawk, Gran Turismo 5: Prologue, and Siren: Blood Curse which unlike the rest of the world was only a PSN download here.
