PS3 Blu-ray Drive Connected and Recognized as Reader in a PC!

750°
225w ago - This weekend Spanish PS3 developers at DemonHades (linked above) have shared some details and pics of a PS3 Blu-ray drive successfully connected and recognized as a reader in a PC.

With the exception of the Lite-On DH-401S that can read PS3 game discs on a PC, this is the first time an actual PlayStation 3 PS-SYSTEM 302R drive has been reported as functioning on a standard PC.

Many may recall last year the DemonHades Team first Mapped the JTag Port on PS3 Blu-ray Drive, and prior to that GodzIvan shared schematics for the PS3 Blu-ray drive pin-outs.

To quote from DemonHades.org, roughly translated:

"Our colleague has managed HadesTeam Calimba of connecting the PS3 BD player to the PC, as you all know the communication interface that uses the reader is bd flex belt so you do not have any type of connector for this work, so we have communicated BD reader to the pc to start to investigate...

Sony is Developing New Laser Technology Far Superior to Blu-ray

500°
227w ago - While it may not be used for the PlayStation 4 which may utilize optical storage discs, Sony is currently developing new laser technology that is reportedly far superior to conventional Blu-ray discs.

According to Examiner.com (linked above), the new Sony laser tech is said to offer roughly 20 times the capacity of current Blu-Ray discs.

To quote: "The development team of Tohoku University and Sony has completed work on a new laser technology offering 20 times the capacity of current Blu-Ray discs.

The most difficult aspect, if I can [Register or Login to view links] of the Google translation as well as I think I can, was reducing the size of the equipment needed to produce such a strong beam of light down to the size of commercial products.

Currently the technology can only be used in experimental prototypes costing over $100,000 to produce. Sony plans to have the laser available to consumers within a few years."

PS3 3D Firmware Updates to Bring 3D Movie and Photo Support

400°
229w ago - In a recent interview with [Register or Login to view links], SCEE's Mick Hocking confirmed previous reports that 3D Blu-ray movie support will indeed be coming to the PlayStation 3 this year along with support for 3D Photos via two PS3 3D Firmware updates.

The first PlayStation 3 3D Firmware update will arrive in September, while the second doesn't have a date set yet.

To quote: "In September this year, we're launching another Firmware upgrade - and this one is going to upgrade the PS3 to support Blu-ray movies in 3D," said Hocking.

"Again, you won't have to do anything - just connect your PS3. For the film market that's a very significant event. Then later in the year - we're not going to date it yet - the PS3 is going to support 3D photos.

Of course the popularity of 3D isn't just going to come from movies and games. There's 3D cameras on the market, there's 3D camcorders coming on the market in the next 12 months as well, and 3D broadcasts."

PS3 Blu-ray Drive Project Begins to Run Game Backups via HDD

850°
231w ago - This weekend SKFU shared news of a research project that himself, iQD and a few others have began work on with the PS3 Blu-ray drive in order to, among other goals, run PlayStation 3 game backups from the PS3 HDD.

Getting Sony's PlayStation 3 entertainment system to function without a BDD was not a difficult challenge for them, however, many may recall previous attempts by MysticHades among others to examine PS3 hacks which allow running game backups from the hard disk drive.

Earlier this year, knightsolidus detailed the Blu-ray drive PS3 CXD4302GB Chip Test Points, and Spanish site Elotrolado reported on a PS3 exploit found to run PlayStation 3 backups along with a leaked Sony Disc Boot Game Patch Programming Guide.

Prior to that, PS3 developers examined several PS3...
