Some PlayStation 3 Service Mode Details!

800°
298w ago - Over the months there has been a lot of inaccurate information circulating in regards to how exactly the PlayStation 3's Service Mode works, and as promised in our previous Dev updates here are some of the facts to help separate the rumors and speculation.

It is a fairly simple process as follows.. For starters, the PS3 is powered off, and a special USB dongle, known as the Jig, is connected. The PS3 is then turned on, and then off, once it has detected the Jig.

After this occurs, the PS3 is then turned back on, into "Service" Mode. From here, the PS3 is re-flashed using a Firmware Update on a USB stick, specifically designed to only install from the Service Mode. Once the PS3 is re-flashed with the software, it is then used in conjunction with a PC running customized software, specifically the DEX.exe and CEX.exe's.

There are a multitude of special PS3 firmwares, basically three major ones. The first is a Core System, followed by the Service System, then finishing it off with the Final Software.. usually Retail.

From the CEX/DEX PC side software, just about anything can be done: Copying, transfer and resigning of box-specific items like PSN games, user profiles, etc.

Furthermore, the systems can be re-flashed to any software version as well. The system's keys can...

50°
299w ago - Community Manager Bryan Intihar of Insomniac Games shared the following via PS Blog today:

It's here! Well, almost. The launch of Resistance 2 is now only days away, so we hope you and your Bullseye are just about ready to go huntin' for some Chimera. The game officially hits store shelves in North America on November 4, and to help celebrate Resistance 2's arrival, we've got something extra-special planned:

Midnight Launch Event: That's right, Resistance 2 is taking over the PlayStation Store in San Francisco's Metreon for the night of November 3rd (and early on the 4th). In addition to being one of the first to pick up a copy of the game, attendees will be able to meet a host of Insomniacs (including Ted Price, our President and CEO, and members of the community team), receive some cool swag, get their copy of the game signed, and have their picture taken and placed on the cover of Resistance 2.

Oh, and if you're planning on purchasing the collector's edition, you definitely want to come to this event. Trust us; your wallet will thank you for it. You can purchase the game at 12:01 am, but fans that show up a bit early can meet us and get that photo of yourself on the R2 cover.

While November 4 has been etched in the minds of Resistance fans, here's another...

299w ago - Elaborating on the earlier Burnout Paradise: The Ultimate Box Announcement, today Criterion Games Producer Jeremy Chubb has detailed what's in store for Burnout Paradise including the Burnout Paradise Network and the Burnout Paradise Party Pack.

New Final Fantasy Versus XIII for PlayStation 3 Details Available

50°
300w ago - IGN (linked above) has translated some new details from Famitsu about the Final Fantasy Versus XIII characters 'Noctis Lucis Caelum' and 'Stella Nox Fleuret'.

To quote: The names of the two were revealed at the Tokyo Game Show to be Noctis Lucis Caelum and Stella Nox Fleuret. Stella is described by the magazine as a princess in the Fleuret family.

She and Noctis are shown in the magazine's screens discussing their ability to "see light." This may not sound all that special at first, but in Versus XIII, it's an ability that Noctis suggests keeping quiet about. Stella appears to be more open about the matter, even asking Noctis when he gained the ability.

Wondering what the characters' names mean? Typical for the FNC series, the two names are Latin. The three parts of the hero's name mean "Night, Light, and Sky." The three parts of the heroine's name mean "Star, Darkness, and Sword." Darkness is also the meaning of Stella's country's name.

Director and character designer Tetsuya Nomura shared with the magazine a few additional details on the characters. Nomura feels that the trailer footage (which you probably haven't seen, unless you made it out to the Tokyo Game Show) tells us a lot about the personalities of the two characters.

Stella, for instance, is shown...

BioShock Developer Details PlayStation 3 Improvements

50°
301w ago - 2K Marin programmer Jake Etgeton reveals that the PS3 version of BioShock will feature new interactive load screens and graphical enhancements due to the use of Blu-ray and the ability to install data on the PS3 hard drive.

To quote: "There are improvements, such as interactive load screens which takes advantage of the increased space on the Blu-ray disc," said Etgeton. "The downloadable Challenge Rooms also offer a slew of new graphical and gameplay content, albeit outside of the fictional universe."

When asked about the PS3 install and how it will affect the game, Etgeton explained, "BioShock PS3 uses a standard one-time 5 GB install. It only takes 10 minutes, and there's even a fancy movie accompanied by Bing Crosby's 'You're Getting to Be a Habit with Me' to help pass the time if you're not off making a tasty, preparatory sandwich."

"Installing to the PS3 hard drive allows us to 'stream' textures and audio faster than the Blu-ray drive can deliver," he justified.

For those of you who want to pick up the PS3 version of BioShock, look for it in stores on October 21.
