OzMods on PS3 Homebrew, PS JailBreak Contains No Sony Code

1000°
222w ago - Yesterday we reported that Sony halted PS JailBreak Australian sales and distribution, and today OzMods (linked above) confirms PS3 homebrew will still arrive next week while the PS JailBreak folks stand by their claim that the PlayStation 3 modchip contains no Sony code.

Below is an image from the PS JailBreak discussion via ConsoleWinkel.nl and OzMods full statement, to quote:

"28/08/2010 - Hello Everyone. On Friday the 27/08/2010 we where given some documents from the Lawyers representing Sony. The documents are Federal Court orders for a temporary injunction.

The Injunction states that from 24 hours of receiving the documents to the 31st of August OzModChips, Quantronics, Modsupplier and anyone else in Australia:

•Give up all stock in our possession, including our sample

I guess it was lucky that the device was delayed by a couple of days. While many people that have received their sample and sent it off to cloners....we sent ours to a well known homebrew developer.

The developer we picked showed us various homebrew applications that he had already developed for ps3 dev units, that he wants to port over to retail units. Yes, PS3 homebrew...

Video: Datel Cracks PSP Encryption, PSP Homebrew on PS3?

650°
257w ago - Update: SKFU has now posted the following update: Ok guys, as Mathieulh is a lot more familiar with PSP related stories, thanks to him I can tell you now that my little idea won't work.

The reason is, that the Datel technique requires the application to run as UPDATE. The PSP runs the program in update mode which the PS3 won't be able to emulate at all. So sorry, no PSP homebrew on PS3, at least not via this way.

Today SKFU (linked above) shared a video of Datel's Action Replay running on official PSP Firmware 6.20, which leaves speculation as to whether the cracked PSP encryption process could lead to PSP homebrew on Sony's PS3 console.

Based on SKFU's idea below, we'll stick this in the PS3 Hacks section where PS3 hacks, exploits, mods, projects and ideas are discussed.

To quote: Datel may had success in cracking the PSP's encryption process and sign EBOOT's to run their [Register or Login to view links] on official firmwares, including the newest and the PSP Go hardware.

Why do I post it as I only focus on PS3 you may wonder, but hey the PS3 just got it's PSP...

Video: PS3 Homebrew Flash via Vidzone Music Application

250°
266w ago - Boring, no really interesting news around so I'll try to keep you interested with this little discovery. Tested and working on a retail PS3 machine.

Not only the lame PS3 Internet browser is able to play flash files, the music application Vidzone is also.

Here is a little example:

The startup Vidzone logo and the main menu layout are simple .swf flash files. Write your own flash file format 5 and simply replace those two files to run it standalone by starting Vidzone:

First replace: /dev_hdd0/game/NPEA00135/USRDIR/VidzoneChannel.swf

Second replace: /dev_hdd0/game/NPEA00135/USRDIR/HDForms.swf

I won't explain how to replace files on HDD again, you should know that by now. I'm still experimenting so find out what is possible yourself in the first time.

PS3 Firmware Update 2.50 Marks the End of BD-J Homebrew?

250°
319w ago - Japanese developer Bu-nyan has posted on his page (linked above) the following:

"※FW2.50でBD-Jが起•–なくなりま–た。
バージョンアッ––て–ま£たので'-は停止ですorz"

Roughly translated, tmaster has concluded the following:

"FW2.50 not start in the BD-J.
Upgrade to stop so we can update orz"

I don't know if Bu-nyan is saying its ok to upgrade or not.

Update: I can confirm that bd-j don't work with 2.50. I tried it on my brothers ps3 and it gives me an error. good thing I still have mine at 2.43 to play java.

Why sony stopped I don't know.. maybe a hack, who knows?

Note: FYI, although most of the PS3 Devs are sleeping CJPC said the following on IRC: "It probably is on, but they may have changed it a bit.. possibly to only work from a pressed bd-rom or some bs, which, still makes 0 sense. bd-j functionality is CORE for any bd player.. at profile 2.0 that the ps3 has (or 1.1, can't recall) so bd-j is not off, something just changed with it."

That being said, it may explain why Bu-nyan and others are reporting BD-J as not working... when...

Launch Java Homebrew from the PS3 XMB; Not an Exploit!

50°
332w ago - Tmaster let us know at the link above that silenoz has found a way to run simple Java games on the PS3 with the BD-J (Blu-ray Disc Java) functionality.

To quote silenoz: I've managed to launch a simple Java game on Game OS, with the BD-J functionality, thanks to the HDCookBook project. You just need to copy some files on a USB key and you're good to go.

Steps to launch Blaster Bunny, pictured below, are as follows:

1) Download it HERE and UnZip it.
2) Copy it to the root of a USB/Flash drive.
3) Go to the device in the video menu and launch "AVCHD".
4) Go to BONUS and click GAME to launch Blaster Bunny.

It has also been confirmed that this method has been working on all PS3's regardless of Firmware and region, including 2.41 apparently, and it's likely to work for other Java Virtual Machine games.

Finally, we'd like to clarify to PS3 newbies that this is not an exploit nor will it lead to non-Java PS3 homebrew, etc as CJPC detailed HERE... anyone stating otherwise is completely clueless!
