Microsoft Shows Off Themes in New Dashboard Interface

50°
318w ago - Microsoft's community manager Larry "Major Nelson" Hyrb has released a selection of new screenshots showing off custom themes in the redesigned dashboard interface, which is scheduled to hit the Xbox 360 later this fall as part of a free software update.

To quote from a related Shacknews article: "A few folks have asked about themes and the new Xbox experience," Hyrb wrote on his blog. "Specifically, how do themes fit in with the new experience."

The revised dashboard is slated to hit the Xbox 360 as a free software update this fall.

How PlayStation Network can beat XBox Live

200°
319w ago - If you regularly browse any popular gaming site you'll have found it hard to avoid hype over the Firmware 2.4 update for the PlayStation 3. While every new update seems to generate unfathomable levels of interest over the smallest, most trivial new features, 2.40 actually appeared to be worth the excitement.

I still firmly believe that Sony gets off extremely lightly with regard to its online service, rolling out additional features and gaining press coverage for services that its rival Microsoft has given Xbox 360 (and even Xbox) owners for months, if not years.

Firmware 2.40 even caused a number of PS3s to cease working, yet the platform holder seemingly came out of the situation fairly unscathed. Those issues aside, PSN is finally becoming the service it should have been from day one, but how can it beat Xbox LIVE?

The biggest inclusion in Firmware 2.40 is support for Trophies, Sony's answer to Xbox's Achievements. Great on paper, but in reality it's nothing more than a novelty. At the time of writing only one game supports the trophy system, which is pretty shocking. Why not launch with support for all key Sony titles? Surely that should have been the bare minimum to expect.

More games will be added to the list over time, but most older titles won't be patched to include...

Showdown: PSN versus Xbox Live

50°
320w ago - Recently, Sony rep Eric Lempell premiered the Playstation 3's in-game XMB system along with their answer to Xbox 360's "achievements", the PS3 trophy system. Jubilant PS3 owners can now listen to their favorite tracks during those marathon CoD4 sessions, message their friends without leaving Snake in the cold, connect Bluetooth headsets in-game and even enter a different game - all without quitting back to the XMB.

True, 360 owners have had the privilege of using these exact features for the past two and a half years, but with an ever expanding market for Blu-Ray, a wealth of excellent titles for '08 and Playstation Home on the way, Sony's now burgeoning online service can now compete directly with Microsoft's.

Storefront: PSN
Both PSN and Xbox Live allow you to download arcade games, download demos, additional content for games, trailers and wallpapers for your menu. Both offer roughly the same amount of demos each Wednesday and Thursday, but the library of downloadable games is strikingly different. While both services have experienced great success in allowing new developers to flex their creative muscle, the arcade game offering of Xbox Live slightly trumps that of the PSN.

Not to be outdone, Sony has managed to tap their Playstation One library while...

E3 2008: How "Sony" Could Steal the Show!

50°
320w ago - Lets face, E3 is only a short while away, 2 weeks today actually it kicks off with Microsoft's press conference. But what can we expect before E3 with the pre-E3 conferences.

First off, there are some pretty big changes. While Reggie Fils-Aime is still at Nintendo, Phil Harrison and Peter Moore have now bitten the dust from Sony and Microsoft and are now at EA Sports and Atari which means no fun with them this year (Especially Peter).

But what can Sony pull out of the bag for their conference this year? Well, we tell you all here what could possibly happen at that conference on July 15th.

Hardware: This will most likely be the PlayStation 2's final appearence at E3 after the short time they had on it last year. There could be one final swansong game for the PS2 unveiled at E3 to send the console off to Videogaming heaven but that is very doubtful sadly.

As for the PSP, it needs a shunt in the back-side. Not since May of last year have I got a PSP game which was Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops. Since then, nothing has come close to interesting me for the PSP (Bar God of War: Chains of Olympus but I'm too poor to get it right now) and now the PSP is dying because of a lack of games so maybe some new games should be coming out of E3.

Games from Sony's...
