Andrew House Reveals Sony Examines Online Pass for PS3 Titles

550°
208w ago - President of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Andrew House has revealed to [Register or Login to view links] that Sony is currently examining the Online Pass model for first-party PS3, PSP and PSN titles.

Both EA and THQ already use an Online Pass system for their multiplayer titles, allowing publishers to reclaim some money from the used video game market as those buying second-hand will need to purchase an online pass for the multiplayer component of the game.

To quote: "Activision's Bobby Kotick had said his company would like to see a subscription based service, however House seemed to warn against this.

"In terms of just a charge for basic online play, that's something that we have to talk about a lot more and we struggle with a little bit because we feel very vindicated and base a lot of the success of PSN today - a 70 per cent connection rate across consoles - on the fact that we've removed that major initial barrier to entry," concluded House."

Finally, Sony has already implemented a similar pass system for PSP shooter SOCOM:...

Video: Kung Fu Rider - PlayStation Move's Unique Launch Title

50°
210w ago - Yesterday we caught a glimpse of Kung Fu Rider in action, and today Sony's Social Media Manager Jeff Rubenstein has shared a launch trailer for the upcoming PlayStation Move title.

To quote: When PlayStation Move launches in North America this September, there will be no doubt about which game is the weirdest - it's Kung Fu Rider.

At our past Move Meet-ups, I've been describing this game as the latest in the escaping-from-the-mafia-on-office-furniture genre. It is not a crowded genre.

When we first saw this game (as "Slider") at Game Developers Conference 2010, we weren't sure if this was going to be a simple downloadable title or something more.

As Producer George Weising tells us in this demo, Kung Fu Rider is going to have a lot more to it than we initially anticipated.

Sony Patents Degradable Video Game Demos Like PSN Titles

650°
233w ago - Similar to what was done with PSN titles including Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars, a recent patent filing by Sony has been found for a new demo system that slowly degrades the game as it is played.

Essentially this means the more hours you put into a downloaded PSP or PS3 demo, the more the demo's gameplay diminishes.

For example, as you continue to play a video game demo, your weapons might decrease in value (size, quality, etc.). It's essentially a system that adds a time limit to a demo.

This new system is reportedly going to help people make the decision to buy the actual game instead of continuously playing the demo. Whether that will work or not is questionable.

To quote: "In one scenario your weapon is weakened or replaced with a less powerful one after so many hours playing the game. Think of it as a timed level down.

Another idea Sony has is to remove levels, race tracks in this example, after you reach a certain number of plays. When you finally buy the game (bottom right) you can use all of the tracks again."

IW Hints of New Callsign Titles Coming in Modern Warfare 2 DLC

250°
241w ago - Just before the weekend Infinity Ward's FourZeroTwo aka Robert Bowling hinted that upcoming Modern Warfare 2 DLC may contain new callsign titles in addition to the usual maps.

He also tweeted this weekend of another MW2 playlist update to prevent the spread of the recent "ice skating" / speed hack (video below).

Below are the related Twitter tweets:

"Leads meeting @infinityward this morning; Lots of #MW2 DLC discussion got me wondering, what would YOU suggest as some new callsign titles?"

"Another #MW2 playlist update to prevent the spread of the "ice skating" / speed hack. Will prevent matchmaking into modded games."

"@fourzerotwo so it was a hack?" via @xblfan2001 - Yes. These aren't bugs in game code but game files being changed by users on modded kits."
