Why a New XBox Console is Coming Sooner Than Later

350°
281w ago - I predict the new Xbox, whatever it may be called, will be announced before years end and furthermore will be available sometime (probably second-half) in 2010. Here is why...

Phooey To Those Who Say It's To Early For A New Release
Being so dominant in the computer world for so long now, Microsoft already has deep-seeded roots in a culture where people are willing to spend anywhere from $150 to $450 on a new graphics card, just one singular component of a PC.

As such, I am thinking the way they see it, why would people not be willing to upgrade to an entirely new console for around the same amount of money? The 360 is after-all already going to be four years old this November, and lets not forget, the first Xbox launched in November of 2001. Yep, that just four years prior to the 360's launch.

Still, plenty of people would definitely be upset by the news of a new console for a plethora of different reasons. Number one being that for whatever reason, people see consoles as being immune to the plague that affects all other technology: once something is released it is already dated.

I believe Microsoft knows this is the mindset, and the main reason I believe they are going to be able to pull off the release of a new console in the mind of many consumers "so soon" is...

EVGA Releases GTX 275 FTW Edition, Faster Than GTX 280 FTW

50°
283w ago - EVGA released its fresh new Geforce GTX 275 FTW Edition 896-P3-1173-AR graphics card, which marks a significant achievement in the competitive GTX 275 lineup from various manufacturers for its superior clock speeds and its relatively competitive pricing.

Not surprisingly, the EVGA Geforce GTX 275 For The Win is officially the fastest GTX 275 card to date, with clock speeds of a 713MHz core, 1512MHz shaders, and 896MB of 512-bit GDDR3 memory at 2520MHz.

Unfortunately, this model does not come with double memory chips for a 1792MB configuration, but the frequencies of its GPU do bring up an interesting observation. When compared with the Geforce GTX 280 FTW Edition that launched in June 2008 at 670/1458/2430, the new GTX 275 FTW with the lower model number actually has faster overall clock speeds.

In terms of theoretical performance at factory overclocked memory speeds, the 55nm GTX 275 FTW gives roughly 141.12GB/s of memory bandwidth on a 448-bit interface, while the 65nm GTX 280 FTW gives 155.52GB/s on a 512-bit interface. It is also important to note that the 55nm GTX 285 FTW Edition expectedly still tops both models with roughly 177.4GB/s on a 512-bit interface.

Overall, it seems apparent that memory performance of remains linearly consistent throughout Nvidia's GTX 200-series...

PS3 Outsells Everything Else in Japan Thanks to Yakuza Influence

250°
289w ago - The PlayStation 3 outsold the Wii and Xbox 360 in Japan this week. It also outsold the Nintendo DSi, PSP, DS Lite and PlayStation 2, not something we've seen happen too often.

The hardware boost, propelling the PS3 out of its regular fourth place finish, can be chalked up to the release of Yakuza 3 (AKA Ryu Ga Gotoku 3) for the platform which sold 372,000 copies during the week.

A bundled version that shipped with a white, dragon-emblazoned PlayStation 3 likely helped move more hardware than normal–enough to outsell the Wii and Xbox 360 combined.

We'll be interested to see how the newly released Resident Evil 5 affects hardware sales next week, as it will be available on both hi-def console platforms.

The bestselling hardware in Japan for the week of February 22nd to March 1st is...

• PlayStation 3 - 36,513
• Nintendo DSi - 35,827
• PSP - 35,588
• Wii - 17,876
• Xbox 360 - 11,795
• Nintendo DS Lite - 11,774
• PlayStation 2 - 5,099

Nintendo Chief: Expect a Higher Price Point for DSi than DS Lite

100°
293w ago - Nintendo chief Satoru Iwata has confirmed that the DSi is still on track to be released in North America and Europe within the next six months, but has indicated that it will cost more than the DS Lite.

To quote: Satoru Iwata has confirmed that the DSi is still on course to launch in Europe and America in the next six months - but has added that the device will cost more than its predecessor the DS Lite.

The DSi is the third iteration of Nintendo's dual screen handheld and boasts bigger screens, a built in camera and downloadable content store amongst other tweaked and improved functions.

It launched in Japan in late 2008 and has been a big hit with consumers in the territory.

And in an interview with investors following its recent end-of-year financials, Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata has revealed more about the launch and manufacturing strategy for the DSi when it arrives in countries outside of Japan.

Sony is Working Harder for Gamers Than Microsoft and Nintendo

250°
294w ago - We all know who is winning the console war, but who is putting more effort into their gaming division? We break down the basics in each company's work efforts, and showed what each company has to deal with in the gaming industry.

Advertising:
Everyone knows that Microsoft is doing an excellent job with their advertising campaign. You see their advertisements all over national television, stores, and even in some cases on Mountain Dew (Halo 3). Nintendo does not advertise to quite the extent of Microsoft, but that there really is no need for it.

The Wii already has ridiculous sales and there is no need for Nintendo to waste their money on marketing. Everyone already knows what the Wii is about and putting commercials everywhere would be useless. And then comes Sony.

We all know that Sony is not on the ball with their marketing but I feel we will begin to see changes this year. We have already seen them advertise to the max with the Winter X-Games and I look for it to continue. Especially with titles like Killzone 2, God of War 3, Gran Turismo 5, Heavy Rain, and much more expected this year.

Microsoft:
Microsoft currently only has to deal with one platform, the Xbox 360. With one console, they have to work on games for that console as well as bring out...
