Sony Aids Indie PSP Devs with Faster QA and Lower Price Points

50°
267w ago - The price cut on the PSP devkit has already opened PSP development to more interested parties, but apparently that's not Sony's only approach to bringing in more devs to the handheld.

According to Develop (linked above), Sony is also cutting down on the time it takes for a game to pass the quality assurance process.

They're also abolishing concept approval and, perhaps best of all, they'll be instituting very low price points for new games.

As part of their bid to further propagate digital distribution especially for the PSP and the new PSP Go, Sony has already signed on over 50 developers working on new games and apps. More are also reportedly on the verge of joining.

One of the new devs working on content for the PSP platform is iPhone stalwart Subatomic Studios, who is currently preparing a PSP-exclusive version of its Fieldrunners tower defense game. India's Gameshastra and PlayStation Network vets Creat have also signed on.

To quote: "We're making games that are just 20MB each, that's less than a minute to download - instant gratification, snackable content," said Subatomic's Ash Monif. "This is an opportunity for the premier indie developers - and I hope we represent that group - to come in and offer content that will fit the PSP."

Street Fighter II HD (EU) Stuck in Sony QA Due to Problems

100°
290w ago - Although American players have been able to enjoy Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix for quite some time now, European PS3 owners have been left in the dark. We've heard the cries before: "blame Sony," they'd say.

ThePSN.co.uk (linked above) had a chat with Capcom UK's Leo Tan to find out why SCEE is denying release of the game. To quote:

The nice Leo Tan at Capcom UK advised us that the release was currently dependant on "Sony QA", having been submitted twice before for release but winding up banjoed by SCEE due to "faults and other problems" that required the game to be "redone".

Capcom plan to submit a further version "hopefully within three weeks" that they expect to pass QA, but they "can't give any assurances as [we] thought the last one would pass".

Rumors still abound that the game was delayed due to arriving in Europe just after Sony's "no Trophies, no release" rule came into effect, so perhaps we'll get a definitive, Trophy-ready version by February.

Square-Enix Attending E3 2008 - Will FFXIII as well?

50°
329w ago - This years list of developers attending E3 in July has been released. It isn't much of a shock that Square-Enix will be attending as they do every year.

What will be interesting to see is if they still believe that E3's downsizing gives them a good excuse to only show a small exhibition like last year, where we got almost no information concerning Final Fantasy XIII or any of the other Fabula Nova Crystallis titles.

The last time Final Fantasy XIII was shown outside of Japan was when it was revealed to the world at E3 2006 and ever since then it's been shown in private in Square's infamous Closed Mega Theater. All we received at last years convention was an interview with John Yamamoto, Square-Enix's European and North American CEO who divulged the possibility of a worldwide released.

He even then went onto say that they were saving all their big announcements for the Tokyo Game Show. Only two trailers have been released to the public in total, one of which, some of us were actually desperate enough to pay for.

All games in the compilation have been in development for over 2 years now so maybe Square-Enix will actually be confident enough to show us something new at this years E3. Let's hope so anyway. I suppose we'll have to wait for Square-Enix's game line-up which should be...
