Guide: Apple TV Rips via Ubuntu Linux and a PS3 Blu-ray Drive!

200°
312w ago - This guide is an addendum to [Register or Login to view links] guide. It explains how to use your PlayStation 3 Blu-ray drive to transfer BD movies onto a Mac or a PC for subsequent ripping & Apple TV encoding.

The primary purpose here is to avoid the expense of a computer-based Blu-ray drive for movies rips. Hardware/Software needed:

1. Sony PlayStation 3
2. USB keyboard & mouse for PS3
3. Windows XP/Vista PC or Mac with Parallels (100GB free space)
4. CD-RW or DVD-RW blank disk
5. Gigabit Wired Network
6. [Register or Login to view links] (free PC app)
7. [Register or Login to view links] (commercial PC app, ~$100, 21-day trial available)
8. [Register or Login to view links] (free open source)

Guide:

1. You have to install Ubuntu Linux onto your PS3. Those who are intimidated by this step or Linux in general - don't worry!

Installing other operating system on PS3 is fully supported by Sony, unlike say "patching" Apple TV. Also, installing Ubuntu is a very simple process even if you'd never touched...

Sony considering external PS3 hard drive?

400°
346w ago - SCEE boss David Reeves has hinted that Sony may at some point consider releasing Official external PS3 HDD's.

"We launched with 60GB and to reduce the price we went to 40GB. We're not sure we want to stay with that configuration of hard drive, and I think what you're going to see in the future is maybe consumers can choose.

The PlayStation will stay the same, but consumers can choose whichever size of hard drive they want. They can now, or course, because it's not a proprietary hard drive." said Reeves.

To quote: "It might be that we will offer the possibility for people to have a bigger hard drive, but they have that option now.

But it does not mean that we have anything in the works to introduce a different model or bigger hard drive built in," added Reeves.

3.5" 500 GB SATA Hard Drive Housing Project for PS3

100°
349w ago - Milky_Joe has created an interesting looking 3.5" PS3 Hard Disk holder for a school project. The inspiration for the the project was that 3.5" Hard Drives were a lot cheaper than 2.5" equivalents.

To quote: The case itself was constructed from black acrylic sheets (3mm thick for the dimension lovers out there) that were cut to shape with a laser cutter and moulded were necessary (i.e the top and bottom panels).

The pieces were stuck together using a chemical known as diachloromethane (I could give you the atomic structure if you wanted) which dissolves plastics before evaporating to leave whatever it was that was unlucky enough to be touching the plastic at the time well and truly stuck.

I used silver spray paint (I believe it was Ford Moondust to be precise) to spray on the motif and black fabric on the underside to prevent scratching. The HDD is held in place by a 2-piece bracket that sits snuggly within the curved panels of the unit to hold it tightly in place (or at least it would if I had the **bleep** screws).

One cable runs from the data socket on the hard disk to the PS3 and the other provides power from the mains with the help of an adapter.

Hot Shots Golf requires a 20 minute 5GB install to PS3 hard drive

100°
359w ago - It looks as if Devil May Cry 4 has a fellow friend in Hot Shots Golf as it too requires a lengthy 5GB install to the PS3's hard drive.

To quote: We don't know if this'll be in the final retail version of the game, but we were annoyed to see that Hot Shots Golf, just like Devil May Cry 4, features a required installation at game launch.

In fact, with about 5GB of data being installed onto the PS3 drive, it's just as lengthy as Capcom's action game. We were surprised by this -- we didn't have our sandwiches ready for the long-haul.
