Nintendo Wii Homebrew Channel BETA 9 Now Available

50°
300w ago - Marcan has announced the Nintendo Wii Homebrew Channel BETA 9 is now available for those interested.

Download: Wii Homebrew Channel BETA 9

To quote: Beta9 would have been out a few days ago, but then Nintendo came up with the new October 23 update with perfect timing, so we had to make sure the beta9 installer was compatible (read: exploited a new bug nobody knew about until then).

Warning: We've updated the ELF loader to be compliant with the specs. Unfortunately, DevkitPPC ELFs currently are not (they will be in the next release), so they'll break. App authors should distribute DOL versions. If they don't, tell them to. If they don't, convert it yourself:

powerpc-gekko-objcopy -O binary boot.elf boot.dol

Newer ELFs produced by the new toolchain (when it comes out, hopefully soon) will be compatible both with the new loaders (HBC beta9) and all the old loaders. All DOL files work as usual. The new linkerscript will also be more flexible (we're using it for all the binaries involved in HBC, instead of a mixture of custom linker scripts). Authors of other loaders will like this.

New Wii System Menu Update Blocks Homebrew Channel & More

50°
301w ago - Although still labeled as System Menu 3.3, this Nintendo Wii update officially includes the renaming of Wii Points to Nintendo Points and cosmetic changes to some of the menu icons.

Unofficially, the update is said to block the Wii Homebrew Channel and more as follows:

- This blocks new installations of anything fakesigned, that is, Homebrew Channel (both new installs and updates), wads (legal and illegal), Starfall, cIOS, anything that installs IOSes secretly like AnyRegion Changer or AnyTitle Deleter, xyzzy and DVDX (used for apps which have DVD support). This list is not exhaustive, but please add to it if you think of anything else.
- This also blocks access to /dev/flash. This means raw nand dumping utilities no longer work.
- If something is already installed then it isn't affected, like Homebrew Channel, etc.
- The homebrew developers are already planning how to work around this update.
- You currently need this update to access the Wii Shop Channel.
- If you already have the Homebrew Channel and DVDX, and aren't planning to install anything big that will affect your Wii, then you are most likely unaffected. Normal everyday apps such as Homebrew Browser are completely unaffected as long as you already have the Homebrew Channel.
- It updates all IOSes with...

Press Release: Wii Speak Channel and Wii Speak accessory will connect friends and family and herald the next evolution of social gaming

Socialising and communicating with friends and family has just got easier - and more fun - as the new Wii Speak accessory and Wii Speak Channel are launched for Wii across Europe on 5 December 2008.

Wii Speak enables people to connect to and communicate with friends using the free-to-use Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection in a way that is very socially inclusive. Wii Speak can be connected directly to the console and pick up the conversations from an entire room of people, meaning friends and families can all get involved in conversations, sharing gaming and social experiences together. It's just like using a phone to make a call and chat with other Wii-friends: but with Wii Speak, everyone in the room can get involved in the conversation.

The new Wii Speak Channel, accessed from the Wii's main menu, allows up to four console users - who can...

Microsoft Details XBox 360 Themes 2.0 and Friends Channel

50°
305w ago - Microsoft's Gamerscore Blog (linked above) has detailed their new XBox Experience, more specifically the Themes 2.0 aspect of it and the Friends Channel.

To quote: There's been a lot of chatter about whether or not you can keep what you have, how they will look and how the new stuff will be different. We'll be tackling all of that today so pay attention! Also in this week's Developer Diaries, we're going to show you more on the new Friends Channel - another area we got a lot of questions about after we first showed it to you at E3.

This fall, themes are getting even more detailed with the New Xbox Experience. Themes will take over more than just the background of your Dashboard - they will be present on every channel in cool, dynamic ways. Yes, I said, "DYNAMIC." Check out the screens below that show the Underground Theme on the Dashboard and the Friends Channel. (Remember, to see the images more clearly, click on them and you will be sent to our flickr feed.)

Every graphic on each channel will tie into your theme and change if you choose a different one. You can really see this on the Friends Channel - each of your friends' Avatars will stand next to a different graphic or environment. These graphics will match the theme you choose and will change dynamically as you navigate from...
