Sony Plans to Turn Closed LittleBigPlanet BETA into Open Demo

50°
303w ago - Everyone is going absolutely nuts over the LittleBigPlanet BETA, as multiple gaming sites all over the Internet are giving away thousands of access codes. But you may not have to get lucky if you wish to play the game before its October 21 release date...

According to reliable inside information delivered by a reader, it seems Sony plans to open up the BETA testing during the final week to give everyone a shot at it. Essentially, they produce the closed BETA to generate hype and interest, and then open it up to the public in the form of a playable demo a week before the game launches. The tipster in question posted the following in the Blu-Ray.com forums-

"If you don't get in, don't worry. They are supposed to be opening up the public BETA for the final week. Last I heard they were still planning on doing so, this closed BETA is just there to generate a bit (a lot) of hype for the game before it releases. Basically they are talking about turning the limited time closed beta into a demo for the week before launch. It is easier to do this than to release a demo."

This info evidently comes straight from SCEE, and if that's true, there's no denying its validity. The concept makes perfect sense to us, too, so we're going to say we're about 95% certain this rumor will be proven correct very soon....

Closed Home BETA applications open for Japan

300°
312w ago - Sony Computer Entertainment Japan announced today that they are now accepting applications from July 31, 2008 (Thursday) to August 11 (Monday).

Applications are made by downloading the PlayStation Home PS3 theme. The BETA will start in late August and is limited to 10,000 people.

In the case there are too many applicants, there will be a lottery to decide who is selected for the BETA. Images of the Japanese BETA show a Namco space that features the games Pac-Man, Moth-paid, DigDug and Elevator Action.

There is also an image of an Echochrome arcade machine inside Home.

PS3 Home 'Open Working BETA' Still On Track for 2008

300°
320w ago - Sony's long-promised PlayStation 3 virtual world Home is still on track for a 2008 release, although it'll likely stay in BETA.

While talking to senior director of PlayStation Network Susan Panico yesterday about Sony's new online PS3 magazine Qore, we got very briefly onto the subject of Home.

Saying that the software is still due for release at the end of the year, Panico noted that the "rollout will be similar to Gmail," describing what will launch this year as an "open, working BETA."

I certainly hope it's not that similar to Gmail, or it'll never get out of BETA. :P

No LittleBigPlanet Open BETA says Producer

100°
324w ago - The Community Development Manager (Sam Bennett) and Producer (Pete Smith) of LittleBigPlanet have again said that there will not be a LittleBigPlanet public open BETA.

Instead, the BETA test will be done by an internal group at Sony, but a small number of gamers and press may be invited to this. SCEE did previously say that the closed BETA would start this summer.

To quote: We had the opportunity to speak at length with various LittleBigPlanet producers at PlayStation Day, as well as get some hands-on time with the title. Top of our discussion list was the beta. We wanted to know as much as possible about when it's coming and have done since it was implied last July.

However both Sam Bennett (Community Development Manager) and Pete Smith (Producer) maintained that a public, open BETA will sadly not be happening. The game will go through a BETA phase, obviously, but this will be performed by an internal group at Sony.

There's a possibility of a small number of gamers and press being invited into the BETA phase, but nothing has been confirmed yet. Releasing the game in its entirety to the public, free of charge would be suicide.

Instead, there's talk of a demo being made available, which will curb our monstrous hunger pangs for the game until its October...

Thanks to shhhoff at GameTrailers, he has devised a way that users may be able to sneak into the BETA through the use of finding your away around the Japanese entry portal.

The complete guide can be viewed HERE, and good luck!
