Video: The Unfinished Swan: Art and Design Developer Diary

50°
97w ago - Giant Sparrow Game Designer Ben Esposito has shared a video today spotlighting the art and design as part of their The Unfinished Swan developer diary.

To quote: Like a lot of folks, I first saw the tech demo for The Unfinished Swan when it made the rounds online in 2008. The idea stuck in the back of my head but it wasn't until later when Giant Sparrow put up a job posting that I decided: I had to make that game.

I had just graduated from college without much professional experience, so I did what I do best and made a game for them. You can check it out [Register or Login to view links] if you'd like. The video cuts off because the end of the game says "Call me" and has my phone number on it.

It got the attention of the Giant Sparrow team, and I ended up flying out to Los Angeles to work on the game. I was elated and a little shocked, but I came to learn that at Giant Sparrow, the player experience always comes first - and my little game was designed to create a very specific experience.

Now, in October 2012, The Unfinished Swan is out in the wild (well, to PlayStation Plus members) and we're proud that we were able to make a truly experiential game.

BreakQuest: Extra Evolution Exclusively on PlayStation Minis Today

50°
97w ago - Beatshapers Founder and CEO Alexey Menshikov has announced that beginning today BreakQuest: Extra Evolution is exclusively breaking and questing on PlayStation Minis for fans.

To quote: It's Alexey Menshikov from Beatshapers and I'm pleased to reveal our next game - BreakQuest: Extra Evolution is coming to North American PlayStation Stores today as a PlayStation Minis exclusive (PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, and PlayStation Portable), priced at $3.99.

This game has a long story: the original game was released back in 2004 on PC by Spain-based Felix Casablancas and Nurium Games, and was the best breakout-style game at its time featuring something very unique for the genre - fully interactive physics.

We were one of the biggest fans of the game and when Sony approached with introduction of PlayStation Minis; we decided to bring this game to minis in 2010, which was quite successful.

A year after the PSP minis release, we thought about its sequel with the twist - at that time we had a feedback from the PSP version players, so we decided to improve the gameplay and design: we took best game and design elements of original game and rebuild it from scratch, incorporating our vision and our inspiration from the original BreakQuest.

As a result, we have created...

Video: Mugen Souls on PlayStation 3 Tuesday, NIS America Update

250°
98w ago - NIS America Marketing Coordinator Ryan Phillips has posted up a fresh video trailer today announcing that Mugen Souls will be hitting the PlayStation 3 this coming Tuesday alongside an NIS America update below.

To quote: I'm dropping by today to briefly talk about our upcoming RPG title Mugen Souls, developed by [Register or Login to view links] and [Register or Login to view links].

Mugen Souls is set to release next Tuesday, October 16th, so I'd like to go over a few of the game's awesome features and game mechanics. Afterwards, I'll recap a few of the announcements we made at Tokyo Game Show 2012 a few weeks back. Here we go!

Story-wise, in Mugen Souls you can expect the typical humor and zaniness you've come to expect from NIS America titles. You'll enter a small galaxy in the universe containing seven worlds, shimmering in seven colors... These worlds exist and act independent of one another.

This has allowed them to develop and nurture rich, unique cultures. One day, a decree was sent out... "I'm gonna make everything in each of these worlds bow to me!" This reckless statement came courtesy of the egotistical, yet strangely cute, "Chou-Chou."

As Chou-Chou, it's your mission...

Video: The Unfinished Swan Dev Diary: Original Music & Sound

50°
98w ago - Composer Joel Corelitz has shared a Developer Diary video today spotlighting The Unfinished Swan original music and sound alongside a list below of ten things fans should know!

To quote: At its core, The Unfinished Swan is about the joy of creation and self-discovery. These themes revolve around two central characters: one young, who has dealt with great loss and loneliness, and one old, who must reconcile his current stage of life as well as his fate.

One of the initial conversations I had with Peter Scaturro, music supervisor at the Santa Monica Studio involved using the key components of the score to offset the melancholy of the story. I consciously steered away from anything that felt too sad, stark or desolate. Instead,

I focused on crafting a mood that was lush, curious, and warm. We wanted the music to serve as a companion for Monroe and the player as they explored the world of the game. To achieve this, I chose to highlight certain instruments and sounds that were inspired by the characters themselves.

Monroe's signature sound is played by plucked and mallet instruments like marimba and harp - youthful, resonant sounds that highlight his innocence as well as the storybook-quality of the game. The bizarre, pompous King is heralded by gritty, electronic harpsichord...
