Perry: Sony has no chance of making money on the PS3

400°
314w ago - Well respected Acclaim boss David Perry has stated that because sony has sold the PS3 at a lost, they basically have no chance of making money on the PlayStation 3.

He added "if they release the PlayStation 4 and have an even more expensive console and raise the cost of games by ten dollars, that would not be good."

To quote: "Because of the cost of making the PlayStation 3 and because they sold it at a loss, Sony basically has pretty much no chance of making money on the PS3, because it's lost more money than they made during the entire peak of the PlayStation 2 - it's not going to happen again for Sony," stated Perry.

"If they release the PlayStation 4 and have an even more expensive console and raise the cost of games by ten dollars, that would not be good," he added.

Sony making UMD PSP movies cheaper

200°
315w ago - Sony is reportedly preparing to cut the price of new UMD videos by $10 to $25 less than the UMD initial pricing.

This will see many new releases hit the market for a maximum of $15.

To quote: "We want to provide a legal offering from the studios, ... and it's an easier conversation to have with them now," said John Koller, director of hardware marketing at Sony Computer Entertainment America.

"There's a lot of positive momentum with the PSP."

To make sure consumers buy UMDs this go around, Sony is shaving new release list prices to $9.99 to $14.99. That is $10 to $25 less than UMD initial pricing a few years ago.

Rumor: Sony making unique Trophies Mandatory in 2009

300°
319w ago - According to an anonymous development source, Sony will be making the inclusion of trophies mandatory with the release of each new PS3 title going forward in 2009. Doesn't sound too far fetched to us, considering that trophies are essentially Sony's answer to Xbox 360 achievements.

What's interesting, though, is that Sony may be requiring a certain level of variation in regards to trophies. Meaning, if a third-party dev studio is working on a multi-platform project for both PS3 and Xbox 360, they won't be able to simply recycle all of the same challenges in each version of the title.

To quote: While not every game may include Trophies for now, at least one major developer tells Joystiq that Sony's answer to Achievements will be "mandated" by Sony for every new PS3 release in 2009.

This isn't entirely unexpected given recently-revised comments by PSN director of operations, Eric Lampel. What's more interesting, however, is that the developer, which is currently working on an early 2009 release, is also hearing that Sony may be enforcing some measure of uniqueness between spoils earned on its console versus the Xbox 360.

Commented to developer, "We've heard some things that make it sound like we will have to do some unique to PS3 Trophies...this is all very new to us." While...

Sony lacks manufacturing capacity to meet Blu-ray demand?

50°
333w ago - Despite Blu-ray's utterly devastating victory earlier this year, Sony may be in a spot of trouble. Seems the company has a bit of a problem manufacturing the discs (I swear I've heard that before), and since it's the the biggest producer of The Blu (that's how cool kids say Blu-ray), it could be the biggest obstacle to the format's success.

Not that that really matters, since in five years we'll have a new format. Demand for The Blu is expected to JUMP this year to 48 million units; Sony only has the capacity to manufacture 38 million, and that's after an upgrade to its facilities.

And while I'm thoroughly post-disc (technically), I did have my eye on the PS3, more or less because I could use it as a Blu-ray player.

But then I heard the system doesn't output DTS-HD, so what's the point? :P
