EA Slashes 1500 Jobs, Cuts Back on New IP by Half in 2010

50°
249w ago - Today CEO John Riccitiello of Electronic Arts announced that it is set to cut 1500 jobs, and in addition to that they will be cutting back on new IP by 50 per cent through the next fiscal year.

According to [Register or Login to view links], this is part of their effort to reduce market risks during a tough economic period.

To quote: The result has been a string of new franchises such as Dead Space, Mirror's Edge, Spore, Zubo, Brutal Legend and Henry Hatsworth. The critical and commercial success of these new ventures has been mixed to say the least, though there have been notable successes.

However, question marks now hang over every non-established EA series.

"Electronic Arts has a core slate of games label and sports franchises that we will iterate on a either annual or bi-annual basis," Riccitiello stated.

"And I think you know what those major titles are - all of them are selling or have sold in their most recent edition 2m units or more."

"After that, we've got The Sims and Hasbro, and frankly anything that doesn't measure up to looking like it can pencil out to be in very high profit contributor and high unit seller got cut from our title slate from this point going forward."

Half-Minute Hero RPG for PSP is Shipping Tomorrow

50°
253w ago - Today XSEED's Localization Specialist Jessica Chavez has announced that Half-Minute Hero ships tomorrow for Sony's PSP console.

To quote: Jessica Chavez here. XSEED games mid-level peon, editor and one of the people partly responsible for bringing Half-Minute Hero to your unsuspecting PSPs.

I'm here to talk a little about the game, flaunt its secrets, and most importantly, explain away the title that reminds too many gamers about their bedroom exploits.

So 3, 2, 1, START! Half-Minute Hero is NOT the title of a porno with a very small budget. It actually had a modest budget and most characters stayed clothed.

What Half-Minute Hero is, is a speed RPG/RTS (Real Time Strategy)/Shooter/exercise in affectionate satire. It's a frantic, multi-mode, 8-bit foray into a seemingly stereotypical RPG that will test your skills against the clock and probably make you wonder how wearing a "Charisma Wig" and "Swimming Goggles" can possibly help you save the world.

Only 30 seconds, huh...? 30 seconds may not seem like enough time to save the world, let alone play an entire game, but Half-Minute Hero promises to deliver a true time challenge...over the course of many-many stages, modes, bosses and maps. (Over 20 hours of gameplay and each mode contains 30-50 distinct...

PS3 Slim Uses Half the Power of 'Fat' PlayStation 3 Console

400°
259w ago - The PS3 Slim was reported as running on 34% less power than the previous 'fat' PlayStation 3 model, however, that figure is inaccurate.

CNET's Crave (linked above) decided not to take Sony's press releases at their word, and instead plugged a Slim into machines to test its actual power output. And their findings are a little surprising!

The Slim uses a lot less power than Sony have given it credit for. In standby mode, it's around 70% more efficient, while playing games and Blu-Rays its just over 50% more efficient.

In relative terms, it appears the PS3 Slim is now a lot more efficient than it's fatter, older, more wasteful brother. Those interested can check out the Power Consumption chart below!

Valve Researching Sign Language for Use in Half-Life 2: Episode 3

100°
263w ago - Valve's Gabe Newell appears to have recently conducted a focus group with deaf individuals in order to learn more about sign language and how it can be applied to games, notably the upcoming Half-Life 2: Episode 3.

Why? To help develop Alyx's character, and further the animation technology implemented in the Half-Life games.

Newell explains, to quote: "[Alyx] had a crush on someone who was hearing impaired, so she taught Dog how to sign so she could practice. Something happened, maybe, the person is off fighting the Combine someplace else, but that's why she and Dog would start signing with each other when they wanted to communicate without making noise, or communicate without other people knowing ... It gave us the excuse to build the technology for signing."

The focus group responds by noting the importance of facial expression whilst signing. While the Half-Life franchise has been known for its believable facial animation, it might take even more to fully realize the nuances necessary for authentic signing. It'll be interesting to see if Valve is up to the challenge.
