Project: Dual Boot PS3 - 2 NOR Flashes with Switch for Brick Recovery

1100°
132w ago - I want to give everyone the heads-up on my Dual Boot PS3 (2 NOR Flashes with Switch for Brick Recovery) project and try and get some feedback...

For the last few days I've been busy unbricking/downgrading etc. The spare time I've had has gone into designing my own Dual NOR expansion board for the PS3

Basics are this: It allows you to install 2 firmwares - one on either NOR which can be easily enabled/disabled via switch on the mod board. Initially the NOR expansion will need flashing (Dump NOR 1 & flash NOR 2 with the image)

Could be used as a "Brick Backup" if for any reason you brick your onboard NOR, you have a second image on the expansion.
Primary use is of course to Dual Boot firmware without needing to use your programmer all the time - initial program would be a one-off.

Can be quite useful, hence the reason for designing it. I am quite aware of the fact there are other products available which function the same. This is my own design which is a fair bit cheaper than the current Dual setups.

Once final thing, please bear in mind this is a VERY early prototype atm and still in testing. More than likely there will be a few changes along the way, but updates will be regular (finally got my head round Cadsoft)

I've attached a 3D sample picture......

Video: JFW DH PS3 CFW Preloader & Flash Dumping Without JIG

1500°
148w ago - Today Spanish PlayStation 3 developer DemonHades has shared another video of JFW DH PS3 CFW, this time demonstrating the USB Preloader and Flash dumping without a JIG extracting the backup of the 4 PS3 flash files on the Custom Firmware.

To quote, roughly translated: In this video I show how the preloader already done, we can dump the 4 flashes of the flash, if we make an error to recover.

As you can see the preloader working safely by the combination of the jig, but without the use of jig (never activated if you do not do the combination, and although it does not detect activated if the magic flags or contained in GRID_UPDATER not perform nothing harmful).

Simply putting the usb where we want to save, and flags magic to do what we send in "direct mode".

In the video we can see GRID_UPDATER folder, this folder is the "Direct Modules Installer" unlike the "direct mode" (root pendrive) this only updates from configurations of plugins, modules to plugins or flash.

In summary:

  • Direct mode: the configuration of the USB Pilla (in safe mode)
  • Installer mode: Install the modules to replace dev and let the new configuration observed.

1saludo and thanks as not Jaicrab, Alexander and Maki and the explanatory video kiki...

Video: Rocketbirds: Hardboiled Chicken: Flash to Full 3D on PS3

50°
149w ago - Ratloop Head Programmer Lucas Pope has shared a video today of Rocketbirds: Hardboiled Chicken going through the transition from flash to full 3D on the PS3 console below.

To quote: Our upcoming PSN game, Rocketbirds: Hardboiled Chicken, got a few upgrades on the way to PS3, and I'd like to dive into some of the technical details of that transition.

Hardboiled Chicken is a vastly expanded and improved game based on our earlier Flash release, Rocketbirds: Revolution.

In going from Flash to the PS3, we added better controls, more screens, more chapters, more weapons, more enemies, and more gameplay modes. And we seriously upgraded the visuals. In this article, I'll talk about some of those visual upgrades and how we did 'em.

Rocketbirds

If you haven't seen or played Rocketbirds, it's a non-scrolling 2D game with a strong visual style. Think of classic 2D action-adventure games like Flashback, Oddworld, or Blackthorne. It could be considered a platformer, but there's no scrolling and each screen is revealed whole-hog when you walk off the edge.

2D Like We Mean It

For the original Rocketbirds: Revolution, we kept things simple. Each screen had a static foreground image and a static background image that were composited...

Project PNM Stand-Alone Mode for PS3 NOR Flash Mangement

1200°
154w ago - As a follow-up to the previous Project PNM news, here is another update from PlayStation 3 hacker No_One below.

To quote: Hi mates, I wanted to give you news concerning the PNM project. I really missed time. But I just finished what I call the "stand-alone mode". In this mode, we can do everything concerning the NOR FLASH mangement.

Here are the functions working now:

  • copy memory
  • dump memory
  • update memory
  • display memory CRC32
  • read memory
  • display memory details

PNM is now working with 2 NOR sockets and 1 "virtual" one which is the PS3 embedded memory. It means for example that now we can dump/update the PS3 NOR like any flasher, but also copy its content to another FLASH and so on...

Next step now consists in wiring the PNM board to the PS3. This is what I call the "PS3 mode". I will do it next week

I will of course give you details, some nice pictures and maybe a video. We are not so far to be capable to dual firmware the PS3 and do some nice progress in FLASH decrypting.

Have fun !
Cheers

PS3 3.60 Slim Flash Dumped, PlayStation 3 3.6x Keys Incoming

1200°
161w ago - Following up on his previous update, PlayStation 3 hacker No_One has now announced that the PS3 3.60 Slim NOR Flash has been dumped via PNM board socket and the 3.6x keys may be coming soon.

To quote: Hi mates, I'm going to be on vacations for 3 weeks. I just wanted to tell you that PNM project will be stopped during this period.

But, i've some great news for you. I successfully dumped a 3.60 NOR flash using one of the socket ! The second socket has been validated too. We are not far from our main goal : "jailbreak again the PS3" !

Here are some snapshots:

  • host console with a new feature (NOR FLASH details...)
  • PNM with a NOR Flash on Socket #1
  • an extract of the 3.60 NOR dump as a proof

Cheers
