296w ago - The wait is over: rumble is back on the PlayStation 3!
These new wireless controllers use a hybrid design, combining the motion sensor of the Sixaxis controller with the rumbling abilities of its predecessor, the PlayStation 2's DualShock 2.
Overall, the new DualShock 3 is a delight. It's slightly heavier than the Sixaxis, with a more sturdy, solid feel. The handgrips no longer flex when you squeeze them, and the black plastic is completely opaque (the Sixaxis used cheaper, transparent plastic).
So far, we see only two small gripes. For starters, the DualShock 3 does not appear to ship with a mini-USB cable; none was included in the retail box we received. Mini-USB cables are dirt-cheap these days, so that shouldn't present a big problem.
Secondly, the DualShock 3 sacrifices a bit of its "oomph" in the name of better battery life (and possibly not interfering with the integrated motion sensor). The DualShock 3 still pumps out a pleasing pulse sensation, but it does feel slightly weaker than the DualShock 2.
Aside from those nitpicks, the DualShock 3 is the controller Sony fans have longed for ever since the PlayStation 3 launched with its neutered Sixaxis. It does cost a bit more money -- $54.99 compared to the Sixaxis's $49.99.
296w ago - Sony has released a full compatibility list for the DualShock 3 controller set to hit retail shelves later this month.
PlayStation Network PSOne titles will support the force-feedback feature of the new controller, along with other notable game titles like Devil May Cry 4, MotorStorm, Heavenly Sword, Resistance, and Uncharted.
For the complete list of compatible games see below. Note that a select number of titles, which are denoted with an asterisk, will require a software update in order to activate rumble support.
297w ago - According to the Dutch PSOnly Web site linked above, the DualShock 3 controller will be released in Europe on May 2nd.
The site points to a reliable source giving them the news, but of course nothing specific is mentioned about the source.
To quote via rough Babelfish translation: Gaming Only have learned from reliable sources that the DualShock 3 on 2 May must stretch in European. The DualShock 3 controller will contain, just like the DualShock and DualShock 2, rumble. Moreover the DualShock contain 3 also the trusted Sixaxis sensor.
What the DualShock 3 here will cost, is to have unfortunately not yet confessed. The controller already as from November 2007 in the Japanese shops, and as from April also in America will be available.
301w ago - Sony announced at today's PlayStation Destination conference that the DualShock 3 controller has received a solid US release date. The controller is set to launch on April 15 at an MSRP of $54.99.
To quote: We have more word from retailer conference Destination PlayStation: the DualShock 3–you know, that DualShock we've been waiting for since the PS3's launch–has gotten a US release date.
Set to launch April 15th for $54.99, it's slated to coincide with the release of GT5 Prologue. Oh yes, feel those engines roar through your controller and make your SIXAXIS-wielding friends envious...like they're just playing a video game or something.
