Dead Rising 2 to Have the Most Onscreen Characters Ever - 6000?

250°
264w ago - At a presentation about the visual technology behind the development of "Dead Rising 2," the game's character art lead, Izmeth Siddeek, said that the development team at Blue Castle games is preparing for players to encounter an unprecedented zombie horde.

To quote: "Dead Rising 2 deal[s] with the rendering of the greatest number of characters ever seen in a video game," he said. "Everything else needed to be subordinated to this requirement."

His presentation focused on how software called Mental Mill enabled Blue Castle to efficiently render many characters in visually distinct ways.

The software is helping the makers of this zombies-in-a-casino action game to present a large number of characters without losing graphical quality and without having to take shortcuts that would put the game's zombies in a small number of outfits.

In a postscript to the presentation, Laura Scholl, product manager for Mental Mill, said that Siddeek said that the "Dead Rising 2" development team is preparing to have as many as 6000 characters on the screen. Siddeek did not say whether that figure was accurate.

Game Devs Discuss Creating Truly Autonomous AI Characters

50°
285w ago - Sony's semi-official blog ThreeSpeech has posted an article that asks AI coders from a number of studios "how close are we to creating truly autonomous AI characters" in games. To quote:

Part one: autonomy

To kick off, we're looking at enemies who think for themselves. How close are we to creating truly autonomous AI characters, able to react in real-time to player actions and formulate their own responses? Some developers have been experimenting with techniques such as Goal-Orientated Action Planning (GOAP) for several years in order to create 'thinking' beings.

But is this desirable? And is there still a role for scripted AI, in which the baddies perform actions based on pre-programmed, pre-determined elements? We ask the makers of F.E.A.R, Prototype, Dead Space and Wheelman.

Participants:

Sergio Garces Casao, Lead AI Programmer, Prototype, Radical Entertainment
Chris Hecker: Independent game coder
Jeff Orkin: MIT Media Lab, Cognitive Machines Group. Previously Senior Software Engineer, Monolith Productions
Louis Gascoigne: Software Engineer, Dead Space, EA Redwood Shores
Nick Davies: AI Programmer, Wheelman, Midway Newcastle

Jeff Orkin: We shipped the first example of a GOAP system with F.E.A.R in 2005, and since then several...

Twelve Soul Calibur Characters we would Love to See!

50°
298w ago - The Soul Calibur franchise has made its mark outside of arcades, due in large part to the console-specific cameo characters. It worked with Link and Spawn, and the newest iteration is gathering acclaim for the inclusion of Vader and Yoda.

With the popularity of digital downloads, however, the prospect of adding even more beloved characters is entirely possible. Here's 12 famous gaming, movie, and comic book characters that would fit the fighting franchise perfectly.

12- Marcus Fenix: Why not bring a gun to a sword fight? Our pitch--in the midst of a massive battle against the Locust, Marcus Fenix runs out of bullets and calls for the Hammer of Dawn at the same time as the tremendously incompetent Damon Baird. When the streams cross, it creates a vortex that leads to 16th Century. Without any ammo, Marcus is forced to rev up his Chainsaw Bayonet and slice up his opponents in order to find a weapon that can kill the Queen for good.

11- Toxie: No one-on-one fighting game is complete without at least one ridiculous character you can play as. Tekken has had everything from panda bears to kangaroos. Why not make things even weirder by throwing the mop-weilding Toxic Crusader into the mix? A mop might not seem like a deadly weapon, but Toxie has literally reduced people's faces to mush while only...

Additional Characters Cost Money in Metal Gear Online

100°
305w ago - With Metal Gear Solid 4 now officially out in the wild, news surrounding the title is spreading fast. Lightning fast, in fact. According to various reports including NeoGAF member The Faceless Master, Metal Gear Online players are allowed to create one free character per console.

Want to create another character? You'll have to pay up, according to the game's login screen, which reads: "You are given the ability to register 1 character to this PS3 system, free of charge.

Register free character for this PS3 system with the GAME ID you are currently logged in under? (If you play the game with another GAME ID, you will have to purchase another character registration slot.)"

So, now we know why Konami stuck with using their own login system instead of directly integrating it with PSN. There's no word on how much additional characters cost... yet.
