Sony UK Plans for 2.8 Million Dollar Killzone 2 Advertising Spree

50°
299w ago - Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has stacked a tidy lump sum of £2‭m (approx. $2.8m US) to help promote Killzone 2 in the region, [Register or Login to view links] reports.

Planning to swarm the unsuspecting island with television and movie theater ads, Sony UK is adamant in pushing its upcoming first-person shooter.

To quote: The dedication of £2‭m points to Sony's confidence in the Guerrilla Games developed title, which currently holds a high 95% Metacritic rating - if numbers mean anything to you.

Sony UK has also allotted an additional £2‭m in order to promote other high profile PS3 exclusives, including industry darling, but commercially snubbed, LittleBigPlanet.

SCEE marketing director Alan Duncan told Edge that recent reviews of Killzone 2 prove the title has "lived up" to expectations and "brings a new energy" to the competitive first-person genre.

Sony UK hopes strong ads for Killzone 2 can drive sales in the region, which will receive an exclusive bundle for the game's release. That's fantastic, but how about someone drive to the PSN server room and flip the switch to give us that demo already.

GTA IV Exclusive XBox 360 DLC: Did Microsoft Blow $50 Million?

50°
300w ago - If you did not know, Microsoft announced at E3 2007 that their version of Grand Theft Auto IV on the Xbox 360 will receive exclusive DLC that the PlayStation 3 version will not be getting.

Microsoft paid a whopping $50 million just as a down payment to keep this exclusive. At this time no one but Rockstar knew what this DLC would be and what it would add to the game.

Well, now we have all seen the trailer for the new DLC and if you have not, the video is below. It is basically going to add a whole new storyline and allow you to take control of a new character and will be titled "The Lost and the Damned World".

Microsoft also announced the surprising cost of $19.99. At this point, without a doubt it seems like a steal but will it be worth the millions for Microsoft?

STREETVETERAN (Co-Host on Podcast)
Many people say that Microsoft "wasted" $50+ million dollars on the DLC for 2008's top seller, Grand Theft Auto IV. I am here to tell you why the $50+ million that Microsoft dished out WAS worth the money.

First of all, for the people who own both consoles, the DLC most likely had some effect on what which version they chose to buy. This DLC has caused many people to choose the 360 version over the PS3 version if they would have had the choice....

Gamers Spent $1 Million on Virtual Goods in PlayStation Home

200°
302w ago - According to Gamezine (linked above), gamers have already spent $1 million through purchasing the virtual goods available in Sony's PlayStation Home.

To quote: That's right, Sony's service hasn't been out for long, but it's already made Sony $1 million from the priced goods available.

T-Shirts, furniture and plants have all been enough to cause PlayStation 3 gamers to open their wallets. Intriguing that the "nickle and diming" tactic has already worked.

According to Kaz Hirai at Sony's CES conference, 3.4 million people have downloaded the PlayStation Home Open Beta. Plenty of people to spend some pennies indeed.

What have you done folks? Spending money in Home!? It's meant to be free! Stop encouraging them! I don't think this was what was meant when Bethesda said it could be the industry's defining moment. :P

Midway has 50 Days to Rack Up US $150 Million or it's Game Over

250°
307w ago - Big trouble. Big big trouble. Midway Games is in hot water now, trying to figure out how they can earn US $150 million in just 50 days.

If they fail, they'll have to declare bankruptcy, and it's game over. After getting sold for for a mere pittance, the publisher remains in such bad shape that they're facing bankruptcy in just a little over two months.

A file from the US Securities and Exchange Commission tells us that Midway is really grimacing in financial pain right now. So far, they've got US $10.3 million in the bank, so that's US $140 million to go.

No word yet on what Midway is planning to do with the situation. Call it quits or fight to the death? Or by some miracle actually make that deadline? The health bar is running low, and the economy is itching to deliver its fatality.

Check the source link above if you want to read up on the SEC file, to the lay man, good luck trying to understand that.

Sony Clarifies 14 Million User PlayStation Network Milestone

50°
309w ago - Sony confirms its recently announced network numbers include accounts from both the PlayStation 3 and PSP, but no duplicates; analyst estimates 50 percent of PS3s have gone online.

On Tuesday, Sony made a stir when it announced that its free PlayStation Network had attained 14 million "active users."

The number, revealed to celebrate the PlayStation 3's second birthday, was remarkable, as it appeared to match the 14-million-strong subscriber base for the pay-to-play Xbox Live. Microsoft's online service launched in 2002 and has been a central pillar of its strategy since the Xbox 360 launched in 2005, one year before the PS3.

Three days later, Sony has now clarified what exactly it counts as an active PlayStation Network user. "Seeing as PlayStation Portable does include PlayStation Network services (i.e. games store natively on PSP), yes those numbers do include all PlayStation Network registrations," said a Sony representative.

The rep also said, to guard against duplication, Sony does not count a registration made on the PS3 and then used on the PSP (or vice versa) as two accounts. Like with Xbox Live, the figure also includes multiple accounts used on the same console or in the same household.

So how many PSN users are logging on via the PS3? Sony declined to...
