142w ago - Last week PS3 Firmware 3.60 was released, and as of today Sony has updated the platform authentication xi passphrase for PSN resulting in Custom Firmware users (via FckPSN and similar methods) being blocked, however, according to IRC reports a PlayStation 3 CFW patch update shouldn't be far off.
To quote from PSX-Scene (linked above): "We are expecting sporadic PSN maintenance from approx 9am-3pm PST Thursday 03/17/2011. We apologize for the inconvenience."
That message was the last thing that CFW users got to see today, later after the network was back up everyone found they been kicked off their PSN!
Sony has finally enabled the new v3.60 auth system which was found hiding in the new firmware they had released last week!
Finally, from IRC:
Scorpion1: the 3.60 passphrase will be the same for everyone Scorpion1: well mathieulh said the 3.55 one is Scorpion1: saktdlMapxsbsghmq5dhlwrmtsicyijmzntqaLcpgd8ybbetdmsha=jm Scorpion1: and thats from his ps3 i take it Scorpion1:...
To quote: Guys, take a look at my ps3dm-utils. Now you can enable service mode from Linux. Look at ps3dm_usb_dongle_auth.
What service mode can do for us? Well, there's many but i think the most useful one is the downgrading function where you can downgrade the PS3 firmware to the older versions. From the look of it though, it still requires USB dongle to get the job done, correct me if I'm wrong since i didn't look further enough to verify this. Anyhow, can't wait for the release of the noob proof PS3 Linux, OtherOS++.
Update: Jess has confirmed that USB dongle is not necessary to get into the service mode. No you donĀ't need a dongle! You can invoke it from linux. All the modules comunicate throught dm proxy.
Now you can simulate a dongle through software and authenticate through linux. You can generate the challange and create the adequate response.
To quote from his page linked above: After about a month of hacking I'm happy to announce that Showtime now can be run as a native "homebrew" application on the PS3. See PS3 usage guide for more information of how to get started.

142w ago - Sony's Social Media Manager Jeff Rubenstein has shared a Crysis 2 PlayStation 3 interview today with Crytek alongside news of a new PS3 multiplayer demo's arrival.
To quote: Console gamers didn't get the chance to experience the first Crysis, a shooter known for making PC gamers feel self-conscious about the power of their graphics cards. PlayStation 3 owners won't be left out of the follow-up, as Crysis 2 arrives on PS3 next week.
Recently I spoke with Executive Producer Nathan Camarillo about those trademark Crytek visuals, and about the new multiplayer demo, which just hit PSN last night.
PlayStation Blog: We know Crytek can produce on the PC. How do you utilize the PS3 to live up to the high PC standard?
Nathan Camarillo: It's the core of CryEngine 3 that's able to scale appropriately and we can adjust per platform exactly what we wanna get out of it. We want the exact same gameplay experience, the same fun, the same intensity, all the same visual information that you need to understand and play the game appropriately. It's just a lot of under the hood magic.
