306w ago - Electronic Arts is to release a free online version of the popular Battlefield game to be supported by adverts and micro payments.
The PC game, Battlefield Heroes, will be available only online later this year, and will not be sold in shops.
The move marks EA's first major attempt to tap into new sources of ad-driven revenue in Western markets.
The firm has a free version of its Fifa game in South Korea, earning more than $1m a month through in-game sales.
"Online gaming has a massive audience," said EA's Gerhard Florin, in a statement.
"People want to play games in new ways, with easier access that is quick to the fun. With Battlefield Heroes, EA brings its first major franchise to North America and Europe with a new distribution model and pricing structure adapted to the evolving way that people play."
The video games industry is taking its first steps away from a retail-focused sales environment and towards digital distribution.
EA hopes the model of a free game as download that is supported by adverts and micro-payments could be applied to other franchises it owns.
The new version of Battlefield is designed to have more mass market appeal than current titles in the series, which have sold...
311w ago - Sony's PSP Media Manager is a decent enough piece of software. You click, you drag, you browse, it gets the job done. Only problem is, for some ridiculous reason, you have to pay for it. Stupid!
Stupid in the West, at least: Sony have announced that Japanese consumers can now download the software free of charge from their PlayStation Store. Sucky news for us, right? Not even close. Fumble your way through the Japanese install and you'll find the program itself runs in English. Perfect, legible, sweet English. I just installed it, used it, tested it, it all works. You can download it from the link below courtesy of the Japanese PlayStation Store.

319w ago - Mobile phone provider 3 has launched a new handset that will allow users to make free calls over the internet via telephony service Skype. Users will also be able to use Skype's instant messaging service, 3 said.
But while people using Skype on their computers are able to make cheap global calls to any phone number, this will not be possible via the new 3 handset.
Skype has about 246 million registered users worldwide and is one of the firms reshaping the global phone industry.
To date, mobile phone companies have been unwilling to let users freely access Skype via their handsets for fear that it would hurt their business.
While it is possible to access Skype from a number of handsets, this has involved downloading third-party software, something that has put off the majority of users.
The Skype-phone will be the first instance of a phone operator launching a mass market device that is designed to allow free calling over the internet from a mobile, 3 said.
"It takes an innovative operator... to challenge traditional thinking and offer the kind of product other operators are still shying away from," said Skype's acting chief executive, Michael van Swaaij.
"It's is now truly mobile. Skype has now taken a giant step...
