Console War has Changed, PS2 Declines in Old Age

100°
338w ago - Even as the current console generation marches on, PlayStation 2 sales and software both have kept reliably chugging like a newly-slimlined little Energizer Bunny. But Sony's fiscal 2008 annual report shows that both PS2 hardware and software have begun to demonstrate a decline.

Sony sold .98 million fewer PS2s than it did over last fiscal year, and PS2 software sales are down 39.5 million units year-over-year, too.

According to the report, Sony is planning on continuing decline for the PS2 in its ninth year since release. "However, on the back of worldwide hardware expansion, there are plans for a diversified portfolio of software titles to be released, and, thus, Sony will strive to maintain the scale of this business," said the company.

How are Sony's other platforms stacking up? Chart, and more delicious numbers, after the jump.

Still, though, PS2 software sales dominated over PS3 and PSP software, with almost three times as many units sold. Interestingly, it's the PSP that's sold more hardware than either the PS2 or PS3, moving a total of 13.89 million units, over four million more than last year.

PSP sold 55.5 million units of software, a small .8 million-unit bump over last year, putting it on par with PS3 software at 57.9 million units. PS3 software made a grand...

Gears of War 2: No blinging up your guns

50°
339w ago - With E3 fast approaching, all 360 owners eyes are on Epic's Gears of War 2. And there's nothing more lead developer Cliff Bleszinksi likes than adding fuel to the fire of hype.

Touching on whether or not you'll be able to customise any part of your arsenal, he explained, "We're not really that kind of game. We're not going to allow you to bling out your gun. The Lancer's a Lancer, Gus is Gus, and Marcus is Marcus. Those are the identities we're sticking with." Fair enough.

Bleszinksi's clearly loving what he's playing too. "Just the other day I was driving in this icy level with a tank and power-sliding through Locusts and Gus goes, 'Locust roadkill, baby. Squish. Squish. Squash. Squash.' It was just freakin' great. And then when you shoot you're knocking over trees because we have more destroyable objects and you shoot your Boomshot and everything shatters apart.

"Gears was heavy and Gears was chunky and Gears felt satisfying. And Gears 2 is just really taking that to the next level. It's just cooler and more visceral."

We don't doubt it. Read more from GamePro HERE.

Gears of War 2 Interview - New Map Announced!

100°
340w ago - Game Rumor recently had the chance to talk with Mark Thompson, an engine programmer over at Epic Games. The full interview will be posted later but for now here are some new interesting multiplayer details we learned from our time over at Epic.

-COG and Locust will each have 12 character models (7 each in Gears 1)

-A new map announced, "Dusk" puts players in a smaller, Raven Down style map with locust/cog battles in the distance scenery.

- New flamethrower has a "fuel meter" instead of ammo clips like in other guns, and will jam if continually fired for an extended amount of time.

- Hammer of Dawn will have only 3 charges until it "burns out". A 4th charge is possible, but it will cause the weapon to explode killing the character and hopefully enemies close by.

- Subway's trains movement can be turned on / off with a switch. Described as being "the hardest aspect to program yet!"

- A new gametype "Wanted" pits 9 Locusts on 1 COG or 9 COG on 1 Locust. This modified version of Juggernaut has a clock for each player counting how long each player is the wanted. The wanted can only be killed with execution style rules.

- Boomshot has been modified to hold 3 ammo. Each individual rocket has been weakened, however, if...
