GC Asia 2008: Crytek Hearts PlayStation 4

50°
323w ago - The next generation of consoles will be the "catalyst for a renaissance" in gaming graphics.

During yesterday's GC Asia keynote speech on the future of gaming graphics, the president and CEO of Crytek, Cevat Yerli emphasised several times how important the next generation of consoles (i.e. PS4 and Xbox 360 II: Electric Boogaloo) will be to a renaissance in gaming graphics that he predicts will arrive in 2011-2012.

Not only will the company link its technology development with the console cycles, but it sees the PlayStation 4 as the most important machine of the coming generation, with Yerli stating that "frankly, we are linking ourself to what the PS4 will take up as [its hardware] position; that is the console makeup that will drive all our research, so we cannot wait to know what the [machine] will be about. That's probably the most important missing information we have right now in our company."

So, what's this graphics renaissance he's talking about? Yerli believes that - given that the Xbox 360 and PS3 will be around for a few more years - it will be today's technological framework that drives graphics for the next three years, but come 2011-2012 - and new consoles - there will be a huge shift. Sure, processing power and hardware sophistication will increase as they always...

PS3 Dev Progress Update - Flowcharts and More!

400°
324w ago - This is just a short post to let everyone know we're still alive. Its been a quiet summer, most people were off on vacation (or on holiday, for our friends across the pond), including many of our own PS3 Devs.

However, the summer is over and we all went back to work in full force on the PS3, adding some new and very talented Devs along the way who will be helping out!

For starters, our very own ggparallel spent the past month or so along with NDT testing countless edited PS3 Firmwares on the PS3, and has been able to drastically refine our knowledge of the PS3's bootup procedure.

Below is a clear flowchart of the current theory of operation, the basic procedure is the same as we previously posted, that the system is booted in a "chain" so to speak. LV0 loads lv1ldr, which loads lv1.self (the Hypervisor).

Then depending on the system to be booted, loads the proper Hypervisor policy and then loads the lv2loader for the GameOS. That in turn, loads the LV2 Kernel, which is also hash checked (so we can't change it, forgetting the fact that its encrypted too). From there, the rest of the system is brought up.

Furthermore, we have still been digging through the flash...

Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories for PS2 US Release Confirmed

400°
324w ago - Update: This morning we have been in touch with Square-Enix Europe in an attempt to confirm a European release of the PS2 remake of Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, originally a GBA title.

We reported yesterday that Square-Enix USA has confirmed to managers at the Gamestop Convention that the game will be landing this fall with a budget price.

Confimation of a UK and EU release is at this moment in the words of a Square-Enix rep "tbc." The representative went on to state that they were "unaware" of any plans to bring the game to EU shores, and that it would be "near impossible before Christmas." It was noted that since a US release was happening, a European equivalent would "Probably happen", even if it is a limited release similar to the GBA Final Fantasy remakes.

It seems an international release is unlikely. Europeans should begin praying to the release god now that they see Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories PS2 in 2009.

Square-Enix have revealed to managers at this week's Gamestop Manager Conference that they will be releasing Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories for PS2 this Holiday season in the USA.

Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories is a PS2 3D remake of the Game Boy Advance spinoff title that takes place between Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts II. The...

Qimonda starts volume production of Rambus XDR DRAM for PS3

200°
326w ago - Qimonda, the second largest DRAM company worldwide, has announced that they are mass producing XDR RAM modules for use in the PlayStation 3. An article on EDN.com is suggesting that Qimonda might be mass producing 512mb XDR RAM modules that they first showed off earlier this year. Current models of the Playstation 3 offer only 256mb of XDR RAM, which some gamers, industry analysts, and developers have complained about.

What many of those people don't understand is that the true power of the Playstation 3 doesn't lie in the memory, but in the eight-core architecture of the Cell processor. The Cell processor can handle a lot of physics objects because it's very math intensive, but struggles with memory intensive coding, which challenges developers to completely rework their game structure.
