Videos: Sony's Voice Recognition, Image Enlargement in PS3 SDK

350°
256w ago - Sony has been working on distributing a number of new technologies, already available in some PS3 programs.

The first is voice recognition software, employed by SingStar, that allows the PS3 to quickly recognize up to 20 different languages.

Another technology developed by Sony allows the PS3 and PSP to quickly zoom in on massive images.

Already used in a Japanese release calendar program (available for free from the Japanese PlayStation Store), this technology streams massive amounts of visual data - including video - quickly and scales it appropriately.

To quote: "In SingStar, players are able to quickly go through the song library by simply calling out various commands or speaking the names of artists and songs.

While the technology is currently exclusive to Sony, a report by Dig Info reveals that the company plans on making it available to all PS3 developers in future iterations of the console's software development kit.
Like the SingStar voice recognition tools, this tech will be available for developers in an upcoming SDK update. We're not exactly sure how games will be able to take advantage of this, but it certainly looks impressive."

To quote: "Not only do we have footage of the Trooper, which is The Old Republic's version of the Clone and eventual Storm, Sand, Snow, and Marshmallow Troopers, but we captured a little bit of Sith Warrior gameplay as well, in case you are more of a Dark Side of the Force kind of person.

Sorry about the quality, but this was taken off a screen and you get what you pay for."

Videos: PS3 Slim Loads Games & Movies Faster on Firmware 3.0

800°
256w ago - In videos from last weekend, we learned that the PS3 fat boots itself faster than the PS3 Slim, but the Slim had the edge when it came to loading games.

Now with new PS3 Firmware 3.0, the PS3 Slim loads games even faster... up to 25% faster according to [Register or Login to view links] on a Devil May Cry 4 installation.

YouTube user PS3slimComparison did a PS3 Slim Firmware 2.80 vs 3.00 Uncharted 1 level load comparison, with the same settings on both consoles and same 7200RPM hard drive installed on each.

To quote: "In this demonstration, conducted by the same source as the original testing, we see the PS3 Slim (Firmware 2.8) load Uncharted: Drake's Fortune against the PS3 Slim (Firmware 3.0).

The difference is considerable (you know, for adjustments to software alone), and we don't see why most other games wouldn't encounter similar loading improvements."

Finally, in the second video (below) it appears Blu-ray movies also load faster on PS3 Slim Firmware 3.0 versus...

257w ago - Today SCEA Santa Monica Studio's Associate Producer Mike Graham has revealed more details alongside new videos on Gravity Crash for PS3 and PSP.

To quote: Earlier this year, we unveiled one of the newest additions to the PSN line-up, Gravity Crash for PS3, and were thrilled with all the positive responses it received. So, you can only imagine how excited we were to make the announcement during GamesCom in Cologne that we will be releasing this retro-chic title on the PSP as well!

Please take a look at a brand new [Register or Login to view links] from Stewart from JAW – developers of Gravity Crash – for a closer look at how both titles came about and what you can expect to see in both versions of Gravity Crash.

This is Stewart at JAW, developers of PSN and PSP super-retro title Gravity Crash. The guys at SCEE asked me kindly to write a post about the game, so here it is.

Back in 07, myself and Dave Parsons (project lead) were sat in a coffee shop and a long conversation ensued on all the things we loved about gaming in the 80s.

Pixel perfect collision detection, that sense of tactile movement, simple controls, the richness of things to do but with less buttons needed...
