HAWX: Air combat signed Tom Clancy!

100°
332w ago - Today Ubisoft, one of the world's largest video game publishers, announces the development of Tom Clancy's HAWX (high-altitude warfare), an awe-inspiring game that is primed to revolutionize the way players think about combat in the sky.

Scheduled for release in Fall 2008, Tom Clancy's HAWX turns consumers into elite pilots of the future. The game will appear on the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system and on Windows-based PC.

"Tom Clancy's HAWX marks the next evolution of warfare set in the Tom Clancy video game universe," said Tony Key, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Ubisoft. "We are thrilled to take to the skies and provide a new environment along with an extension of a familiar storyline from Ubisoft's successful Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2®."

Developed by Ubisoft's Bucharest studio, Tom Clancy's HAWX delivers an intense and authentic aerial combat experience by fully leveraging the benefits of the next-generation platforms. The story begins in the year 2012. As the era of the nation-state draws quickly to a close, the rules of warfare evolve even more rapidly.

More and more nations become increasingly dependent on private military companies (PMCs), elite mercenaries with a lax...

Why do some PS3 games require HDD installs?

550°
333w ago - MTV have found out that some Blu-ray games require installs to the hard drive because Blu-ray drives can only read at one speed.

"When this is combined with the extremely large size of Blu-ray discs, and simply dumping existing DVD data onto a Blu-ray disc will inevitably result in longer load times."

To quote: The issue arises from differences in the reading techniques of DVD and Blu-ray. By nature, the outer and inner parts of a disc move at different speeds while a disc is spinning, regardless of format (CD, DVD, Blu-ray, HD-DVD, etc.).

While DVD drives can read data at those differing speeds, Blu-ray reads at one speed. Combine that with the extremely large size of Blu-ray discs, and simply dumping existing DVD data onto a Blu-ray disc will inevitably result in longer load times.

Installations are a way around this issue.

When a publisher asks you to install a game on PS3, it's because they're moving some of the disc data to an area of your console that has much faster read access: the hard drive. You get vastly reduced loading times, but have to sit through an installation.

Sony officially announce price cut for some PS3 games

500°
335w ago - According to French Web site Jeux-France, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has re-examined the price of some of its older PlayStation 3 titles.

Apparently the following titles will now cost 40 Euros: Resistance: Fall of Man, Lair, Folklore, One Championship Edition Formulated, MotorStorm, Ridge Racer 7, Heavenly Sword and Genji.

However, it seems the games have been available at online retailers such as 'game' at this price for some time.

Happy Birthday PS3! The Ten Best Games - Part One!

250°
335w ago - It's Bank Holiday weekend, but no rest for the wicked. Especially when PlayStation 3 is celebrating its first birthday. Yep, Sony's sleek stunner of a console is one on Sunday, and we thought we'd put together a top ten list of the very best games you can buy.

We've aimed for a good mix of retail titles and some cult PSN hits, and the vast majority of games on this rundown are PS3 exclusive - but there's a very good reason for that. For one, we wanted to celebrate the titles that make PS3 unique, and the best way to do that is to pick games which aren't available elsewhere. Secondly, a lot of the multiformat releases are (whisper it) better on 360. But as developers slowly start finding their way around the PS3's architecture, we're bound to see such titles really making the most of the added power under the PS3's shiny hood. Indeed one of the titles you'll see in the second part of this list - which will arrive later this weekend - is a multiformat game that perhaps has a slight edge on PS3 over its rival versions (and which is just so damn good, we couldn't possibly ignore it).

So here goes, then...the first part of our Ten Best PS3 Games. Enjoy!

10. Unreal Tournament III One of just two first-person shooters in our list (and we bet the other one's not what you think either), UTIII deserves...

Highlander: Q&A With Gilles Barril

50°
335w ago - In Highlander: The Game, you play as Owen MacLeod, son of a tribal chieftain whose village was destroyed by the Roman Empire. Scheduled to release in August 2008 on the PC, XBOX 360 & PS3, Highlander: The Game enables gamers to exploit the powers of immortality and manipulate situations that death would normally prevent in order to combat the forces of evil.

We had the opportunity to talk with Gilles Barril, Producer at Widescreen Games as he discusses some of the gameplay elements and storyline packed in the title.

What is it that attracted you to developing Highlander?

One of the most fun aspects of developing Highlander is getting to work with Immortal characters, giving us massive scope in what we can do in terms of the gameplay. The idea of having Immortals that could have had roles in key events of the past is something that really excited us in developing the game, particularly that these Immortals could have potentially shaped history.

What is it about the Highlander franchise that you think still makes it so popular today even 20 years after the first movie was released?

One of the things we have found that is as compelling today as it was in the original films is the idea of Immortality - this really opens up some cool and unique gameplay...
