261w ago - The Web site that originally reported on the upcoming Killzone 2 map pack being a free download, has corrected its story.

The news item now says Sony Computer Entertainment contacted Tweakers.net, stating the DLC will in fact NOT be free, but will cost a still unknown amount of money.

This one IS confirmed by Sony, so alas, no free DLC for Killzone 2.

To quote, roughly translated: Update, April 14 10:32: Sony Computer Entertainment has Tweakers.net indicated that the extension will not be free to download, but an unknown amount will cost.

Indicates that the DLC would be free, as mentioned earlier was not from Sony and is not correct.

Confirmed: Retail Patapon 2 for PSP to be UMD-Free

100°
262w ago - Update: Sony has just confirmed the story with a statement to Ars Technica. The statement reads:

"We're considering a digital only format for the Patapon 2 release as a one time test case as we continue to explore consumer preferences for digital content," Patrick Seybold, Senior Director of Corporate Communications at SCEA said.

"The downloadable game will be available on May 5th at both retail and via the PlayStation Store. We remain focused on providing superior games and entertainment experiences in both the UMD and digital formats and are working closely with our partners to deliver the best PSP line up in our history."

Inside sources at ArsTechnica indicate that the upcoming Patapon 2 for PSP will be distributed solely through digital means. Retailers themselves will not carry UMD's, rather empty cases with the download code for the game.

To quote: Our inside source has given us word that Sony will release its upcoming title Patapon 2 purely through digital means, even though empty cases with the download code will be available at retailers.

Sony may be inching even closer to a purely digital business model, but retailers will surely want to fight the future. Is this the first shot in the digital war? Ars investigates.

The Hunter for PC Out of Open BETA and a Free Download

265w ago - The Hunter, developed by Avalanche Studios (the creators of Just Cause), promises to be the most true-to-life simulation of buck hunting ever designed.

With a mixture of different gaming features, from social networking to online play, The Hunter provides a sandbox island where patience and careful planning win out over run and gun play.

The game is just recently out in Open Beta, utilizing the same "login to play" system alongside ID Software (Quake Live) and EA (Battlefield Heroes). It's currently free to play after making an account and grabbing a 400mb file from download.

From the brief moment of play I've had, the presentation is nothing short of stunning. Birds fly in random patterns, deer sniff the air and scratch themselves. The graphics are phenomenal for such a small install, so it's definitely worth a look at their Web site.

To quote: "Greedings," everyone. As you may have heard, the new Titan Pack expansion for Unreal Tournament 3 will be available on the PlayStation Store starting tomorrow, and it's completely free.

The Titan Pack's downloadable content includes the gametypes Greed and Betrayal, the namesake Titan mutator, 19 maps, the Link Station and X-Ray Field deployables, the Stinger Turret and Eradicator Cannon weapons, the Stealthbender vehicle, the Slow Field power-up, and characters Kana and Nova.

Speaking of Greed, our guys are having a blast with this addictive new gametype. Greed is a fast-paced, "tug of war" style mode in which you swipe the skulls of fallen players and unload them at the enemy base to score points. Silver skulls are worth a point, gold skulls represent five points, and red skulls are 20 points.

It's common to see players fighting over huge hoards of skulls as the clock winds down. Each team always tries desperately to stop the other from scoring while, at the same time, fighting to survive en...
