A few weeks ago Sony's PS3 Blu-ray and Service Manuals were leaked, and today the full PS3 v1.92 SDK is available which includes the required compiler and toolchain for those who do not wish to wait for development of the Open Source PS3 Toolchain to be completed.

188w ago - The first version of an open source toolchain for PS3 is available today courtesy of ooPo, meaning a possibility to create PlayStation 3 hombrew without requiring the Sony SDK.

Download: Open Source PS3 Toolchain

From the included ReadMe file:

What does this do?

This program will automatically build and install a compiler and other tools used in the creation of homebrew software for the Sony PlayStation 3 videogame system.

How do I use it?

1) Set up your environment by installing the following software:

autoconf, automake, bison, flex, gcc, make, makeinfo, patch, subversion, wget

2) Add the following to your login script:

export PS3DEV=/usr/local/ps3dev
export PATH=$PATH:$PS3DEV/bin
export PATH=$PATH:$PS3DEV/ppu/bin
export PATH=$PATH:$PS3DEV/spu/bin

3) Run the toolchain script:

Video: First Hello World PS3 Arrives, Made with Leaked PS3 SDK

1000°
188w ago - In what may be the most lame video thus far, YouTube user vakalokass has shared one of a Hello World for Sony's PS3 entertainment system today.

Why is it considered lame exactly? Well, for starters the PS3 has been hacked and running code that Sony doesn't approve of for a few weeks now via PS JailBreak- including full PlayStation 3 game backups.

Download: PS3 Hello World

Anyway, those interested can check it out below and be aware it was made with a simple printf application using samples from the leaked PS3 SDK.

Finally, the video's caption simply reads as follows, to quote: "The first HelloWorld in PS3, by The_Marioga and CORAGON"

PS3 3D SDK Approved for PlayStation 3 3D Middleware Program

50°
194w ago - Sony has been quite vocal on PS3 3D lately, updating their PSN ToS and outlining plans for 3D movie and photo PlayStation 3 Firmware updates, and today GamaSutra.com (linked above) has confirmed Darkworks and TriOviz have partnered to bring an official PS3 3D SDK to the PlayStation 3 3D Middleware Program for licensed developers.

To quote: "Launching with little support for console games, 3D TVs present a chicken-and-egg dilemma; consumers are waiting for a critical mass of 3D content to justify the purchase while developers are waiting for an installed base of 3D TVs that justifies the development investment," said longtime graphics technology expert Jon Peddie.

He described TriOviz's tech as "an excellent bridging solution" allowing gamers to "play the same 3D console title on their existing HDTVs and then on their new 3D TVs."
