123w ago - Sony Online Entertainment Executive Director of Development Lorin Jameson has announced that the new DC Universe Online PS3 DLC Pack Lightning Strikes hits PSN today.

To quote: Today we're celebrating not only the launch of our second DLC Pack, Lightning Strikes, but also the amazing success that we've had since making the Free-to-Play transition just over a month ago.

Bottom line, there are a whole lot more of you out there playing DCUO. And apparently you're having a good time, because most of you - more than 85%, in fact - are returning again and again for adventures in Gotham City and Metropolis.

You may have seen a few weeks ago when we announced that more than one million new players had jumped in to DCUO since the launch of Free-to-Play. That number is definitely larger now, and growing by roughly 6% each day. We love seeing all of the new heroes and villains in game, and hope you and your friends keep coming back to experience the great new adventures we have planned for the coming year.

But enough bragging! You probably want to know what's going on with the new DLC, which hits PlayStation Store tomorrow. Lightning Strikes has something fun for players of all levels. You can amp up with the new Electricity power set, which offers supercharged new ways to heal yourself...

128w ago - Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) Executive Director of Development Lorin Jameson has shared details today on DC Online Universe, which he states is now free to play your way on PS3!

To quote: Remember back in September when we announced that DC Universe Online was going to be Free-To-Play? Well, it's here!

Starting today you can download DCUO from the PlayStation Store for free, and play all you want with no monthly fee required. Experience the game play features that have gotten players excited about DCUO since it launched, including the intense, fast-action brawler style combat system that makes it feel more like an action game than a massive online game.

Now, you can see for yourself how DCUO offers the best of both worlds. Fight, fly, speed, battle with friends, pummel your enemies, explore the amazing locales of the DC Universe, hobnob with Wonder Woman... all for free!

We're really excited about this transition because you all have been asking us to make this change, and now we've done it - we're making DCUO accessible to so many more players.

We heard all of you out there who told us at conventions, on Facebook and elsewhere that you'd love to jump in to the game, if only it didn't have that pesky monthly fee. Well, now's your chance. With our three...

CCP Games on Scaling the Universe in Dust 514 for PlayStation 3

100°
129w ago - Today Server Architect Lin Luo at CCP Games has shared details on scaling the universe in the upcoming title Dust 514 for the PlayStation 3 entertainment system which is slated for release in Spring 2012.

To quote: I am a Server Architect on DUST 514 and, in this devblog, I would like to cover at a high level some of the online technical aspects of DUST 514, including the challenges we have met and the approaches we have taken in handling them.

As a server architect on the project, I am responsible for integrating the DUST FPS multiplayer battles into the EVE universe, as well as optimizing the DUST battle servers to perform even better. Unlike normal FPS multiplayer games, DUST 514 has heavy MMO elements.

And unlike normal MMO FPS games, DUST has heavy interaction with one of the most successful MMO space games - EVE Online! This imposes challenges on what technologies we should use in order to have this level of interaction with EVE, while keeping FPS gameplay as smooth as possible.

While continuing to rely on the Unreal 3 engine for the FPS multiplayer gameplay for DUST, the interaction with the rest of the EVE universe should naturally take advantage of utilizing some existing EVE online technologies. Think about a simplified...

SOE Announces DC Universe Online for PS3 is Going Free-To-Play

250°
134w ago - Sony Online Entertainment Executive Director of Development Lorin Jameson has announced today that DC Universe Online for PS3 is going free-to-play!

To quote: What could possibly be better than battling with thousands of other players online in the first, and only, action MMO on the PS? How about battling FOR FREE?

That's right, DC Universe Online will soon be free to download from the PlayStation Store, and free-to-play with no monthly fees required.

So what's the catch? There is none. The entire game will be open for you to play for free. We have gotten a lot of feedback from gamers asking for an opportunity to play without a subscription requirement. So, that got us thinking about how to offer access to the game in a way that allows gamers to play their way.

We wanted something that would give players options. We know different types of gamers are playing - and want to play - DCUO, and we want each person to be able to play in a way that best fits their style. That's why we've created three levels of access to the game:

• Free Access - Just like it sounds. Download and play the game for free. You also get all ongoing game updates (except DLC packs).

• Premium Access - This next level of access opens up to you if you spend...

Video: DC Universe Online Fight for the Light PS3 DLC Revealed

50°
143w ago - DCUO Game Director Mark Anderson has shared a DC Universe Online Fight for the Light video trailer direct from Comic-Con today complete with PS3 DLC details.

To quote: Greetings from San Diego Comic-Con! Here on the show floor we're happy to be showing DC Universe Online's first expansion pack - Fight for the Light.

Light powers have been a huge fan request since before launch, and we've created an entirely new power set from the ground up with new abilities that deliver on the power fantasy of wielding light constructs in combat.

We've put way over-the-top weapons that you could only imagine right into your hands! We've worked hard to build on the existing gameplay mechanics that players love, and to apply them in unique ways that give the new powers a look and feel all their own.

Exercising your creativity and bringing your imagination to the fight is a huge part of being a Lantern, and we wanted to bring that feeling to our players. With light, players will now be able to combine weapon-based combos and superpower abilities in way that just feels right for a Lantern.

You can create things like hard-light boxing gloves and use them as a new "on the fly" weapon that comes complete with its own combos. Not only...
