Rumor: Sony May Release a White PlayStation 3, Model CECHH01

100°
296w ago - The folks over at [Register or Login to view links] diligently dug into [Register or Login to view links] to find out that Sony is exploring the possibility of adding a ceramic white PlayStation 3 (Model CECHH01) to their lineup.

There's even plenty of photos to show that this is a serious possibility, and Sony Computer Entertainment America tells BLAST it's a possibility, but not to bet on one way or the other just yet.

"There are many FCC filings like this each year," said SCEA's Alex Armour in a recent interview. "We haven't made any announcements about upcoming PS3 plans, but are comfortable with our current two SKU strategy. We are continually evaluating the market trends and consumer input to determine the appropriate PS3 models for our territory."

What does that mean? If they think they'd sell a bunch, they'll release a white PS3.

What Sony did do was clear the governmental hurdles necessary to bring the product forward. And this all depends on whether or not the PlayStation 3 has the year everyone thinks it's going...

New Microsoft XBox 360 Model May be the Red Ring Killer

200°
300w ago - Reports of the "Jasper" model of the Xbox 360 have been reported to have been in stores since as early as late September, and now a newer report gives us some better details on what to look for, particularly the output voltage on the power brick.

The Jasper chipset is, essentially, supposed to be better in every way, this including the amount of power it requires. So it seems, any 360 made after October 23, 2008 should have the chipset.

My only question is: why the heck wouldn't this be advertised and on the box? I guess if they did that a lot of unsuspecting customers would have suddenly been suspecting, meaning less sales since launch. Still!

VentureBeat reporter and "renowned Microsoft digger" Dean Takahashi has done a write-up on the new model giving us all the details on what to expect, and basically concludes the new model should kill the infamous Red Ring of Death problem.

"We'll see if the systems prove reliable. But logically, they should be a lot better," he writes. Note that Dean was behind the massive six-part series on the thing, so as far...

Koller: PSP-3000 Battery Life Equal to Previous Model

100°
313w ago - Earlier last week, Sony Computer Entertainment America marketing head John Koller revealed during a interview that the battery life of the PSP-3000 would be reduced by around 20-30 minutes due to the larger power draw of the handheld's brighter screen.

Despite this, Koller issued a clarification statement on the official PlayStation Blog today, reassuring consumers that the PSP-3000 model will have "equivalent battery life to the current PSP," which equates to 4 to 6 hours for games and around 4 to 5 hours for UMD videos.

The enhanced screen does consume more battery juice, but according to Koller, Sony's engineers have managed to reduce power consumption of other system parts, making it all even out.

To quote: Hi, everyone, there have been reports about the battery life of the new PSP system (PSP-3000) being shorter than the current model (PSP-2000), following an interview we recently did with Gamespot. I'd like to make a correction and clarify that the new PSP will have equivalent battery life to the current PSP, about 4 to 6 hours for games and about 4 to 5 hours for UMD videos.

While the enhanced...
