Smack Down Productions CEO: PSP Lacks a Viable Business Model

100°
299w ago - According to GamesIndustry.biz (linked above), Smack Down Productions CEO Laurent Benadiba feels that Sony isn't focusing enough on the PSP. He also believes that a significant marketing push could go a long way towards boosting sales. To quote:

"I worked for two years on the PSP, as one of the only developers then, and I really believed in the platform at the time," he said. "I still believe there's potential, but it's like self-confidence - if you trust yourself, maybe others will trust you. If you don't trust yourself, nobody will trust you.

"I think that's what's happened with the PSP - Sony released the product, but they never put enough of a push behind it. Games, ads, better shelf placement - trying to make an effort. I think it was also released at a time when they were still very focused on the PlayStation 3, trying to get it out of the door, that they slightly forgot about it."

He went on to compare the PSP with the success of the Nintendo DS, and noted particularly the strong line-up of first party titles on the latter machine.

"Look at it - it's so much more powerful that the DS, and it's a beautiful object, it's like an iPhone," he exclaimed. "Amazing, and the technology behind it is great. I think they expected the platform to just work on its own - but...

Rumor: Sony May Release a White PlayStation 3, Model CECHH01

303w ago - The folks over at [Register or Login to view links] diligently dug into [Register or Login to view links] to find out that Sony is exploring the possibility of adding a ceramic white PlayStation 3 (Model CECHH01) to their lineup.

There's even plenty of photos to show that this is a serious possibility, and Sony Computer Entertainment America tells BLAST it's a possibility, but not to bet on one way or the other just yet.

"There are many FCC filings like this each year," said SCEA's Alex Armour in a recent interview. "We haven't made any announcements about upcoming PS3 plans, but are comfortable with our current two SKU strategy. We are continually evaluating the market trends and consumer input to determine the appropriate PS3 models for our territory."

What does that mean? If they think they'd sell a bunch, they'll release a white PS3.

What Sony did do was clear the governmental hurdles necessary to bring the product forward. And this all depends on whether or not the PlayStation 3 has the year everyone thinks it's going...

New Microsoft XBox 360 Model May be the Red Ring Killer

200°
307w ago - Reports of the "Jasper" model of the Xbox 360 have been reported to have been in stores since as early as late September, and now a newer report gives us some better details on what to look for, particularly the output voltage on the power brick.

The Jasper chipset is, essentially, supposed to be better in every way, this including the amount of power it requires. So it seems, any 360 made after October 23, 2008 should have the chipset.

My only question is: why the heck wouldn't this be advertised and on the box? I guess if they did that a lot of unsuspecting customers would have suddenly been suspecting, meaning less sales since launch. Still!

VentureBeat reporter and "renowned Microsoft digger" Dean Takahashi has done a write-up on the new model giving us all the details on what to expect, and basically concludes the new model should kill the infamous Red Ring of Death problem.

"We'll see if the systems prove reliable. But logically, they should be a lot better," he writes. Note that Dean was behind the massive six-part series on the thing, so as far...
