King of Fighters Movie Will Introduce a New Science Fiction Spin

50°
302w ago - The Official MovieSet Blog (linked above) has revealed new details about the 'King of Fighters' move which is based on the SNK Playmore fighting series and should be released in 2010.

It also appears as if The King of Fighters movie will introduce a new science fiction spin into the setting established in the games' universe by following the surviving members of three legendary fighting clans who are continually whisked away to other dimensions by an evil power.

As the fighters enter each new world they battle that universe's native defenders, while the force that brought them seeks to find a way to invade and infect our world.

To quote: The King of Fighters movie quietly began filming in Vancouver, Canada on November 27 under the eye of director Gordon Chan, the dynamic Hong Kong-born helmer of Fist of Legend, Beast Cop and the 2003 Jackie Chan movie The Medallion. The screenplay is by newcomer Rita Augustine.

The movie stars Maggie Q (Live Free and Die Hard), Sean Faris (Never Back Down), Will Yun Lee (Elektra), Francoise Yip (Aliens vs. Predator - Requiem), Monique Ganderton (Supernatural) and the coolest Sith Lord ever, Ray Park (a.k.a. Darth Maul from Star Wars: The Phantom Menace).

Is Square-Enix Still the JRPG King?

200°
303w ago - Homicide from Neocrisis (linked above) writes: I'm pretty sure most of you know Square-Enix (formerly Squaresoft and Enix, two different companies).

They are one of the most successful and well known companies today mostly for their JRPGs like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. On a Sunday morning, I somehow stumbled onto the Square-Enix's Wikipedia page.

I saw their earlier titles such as Secret of Mana, Chrono and Super Mario RPG. They all brought a smile to my face as I can remember the days when I was a kid and enjoyed them.

Then their latest games were shown and the smile went away. Square went from being one of the best JRPG makers out there to just another RPG maker.

Is Square still the JRPG king we all know or have they lost it?

15-Year-Old Suffers Epileptic Seizure from Lich King Marathon

50°
305w ago - A 15 year-old Swedish boy may have had the drive to follow in his fellow European gamers' footsteps of reaching level 80 in World of Warcraft in one 27 hour marathon session, but his body wasn't nearly so keen on the idea.

According to a Times report, after playing Wrath of the Lich King for 24 hours straight, he "suffered what appeared to be an epileptic seizure."

Doctors would later reveal the boy's body systems "had been disrupted by a combination of sleep deprivation, lack of food, and the prolonged period of concentration playing the game."

Understandably, the boy's father plans to place limits on the amount of time his son can play videogames after he makes a full recovery.

Let's make something clear; marathon gaming sessions aren't fundamentally bad since they have the potential to facilitate positive social interaction. But when Ho Hos and gumdrops become substitutes for spaghetti and meatballs and people start having seizures, it might be time to put that hot pocket down and reassess the situation.

PlayStation Portable Still King in Slow Sales

50°
330w ago - Another week has gone by, which means we should take another look at the situation of hardware and software sales in Japan. Research firm Media Create has again posted the numbers for the week that ended on May 23 and we'll be serving up a bit of analysis alongside the figures.

Both hardware and software sales registered a drop in the analyzed interval, but the latter suffered much more than gaming consoles in terms of sales. The PlayStation Portable seems to have an iron grip on the first spot in sales, with a bit over 70,000 consoles sold, which registered as both a win and as a loss, because it sold over 19,000 units less than in the previous week.

The Nintendo Wii dropped even more, somewhere around 41,000 thousand, with over 25,000 units less than in the previous week, but it made it on second place, while the DS came in third, with a smaller drop than any of the top three consoles and sales of around 35,000 units.

The PlayStation 3 and the PlayStation 2 from Sony have almost equal sales, of 7,701 for the first console and 7,022 for its last generation cousin. They both sold more than the Xbox 360 from Microsoft, which only managed to move 1,298 units during last week.

The week will be remembered as the moment when the Nintendo Wii managed to cross the 6 million sales barrier,...
