Flower Wins VGAs Best Independent PS3 Game

50°
261w ago - Today Kellee Santiago, President and co-founder of ThatGameCompany, has made a post-VGA announcement on Flower winning the VGAs Best Independent PS3 Game award.

To quote: This last weekend was... whoa, just totally surreal. Jenova, composer Vincent Diamante, and I met up at [Register or Login to view links], where we got together with fellow indie nominees, [Register or Login to view links] ([Register or Login to view links]) and [Register or Login to view links] ([Register or Login to view links]) so that we could brave the great unknown of the red carpet together.

Which turned out to be a good thing because it was pretty hectic and intense there. Did you know going down a red carpet can take an hour?!? I don't know how seasoned veterans like David Jaffe can do it!

These Mt. Dew-themed drinks helped us get through the pre-show schmooze-fest, though. It was great to be surrounded by almost all of the other Best Indie Game nominees - I definitely felt more grounded. I mean, how do you handle waiting in line for the port-o-potty and encountering Samuel L. Jackson?

And then there were the REAL celebrities - [Register or Login to view links],...

Video: flOw Like You've Never Heard It Before

280w ago - Today flOw Composer Austin Wintory has shared a video dubbed "The World of flOw" via the PlayStation Blog.

It was conducted by Austin Wintory and performed by the Golden State Pops Orchestra on May 16, 2009.

To quote: I have a cool treat for fans of flOw! Ever since completing the original score for the game (shockingly, already more than 2 years ago!!!) it was my dream to adapt the music for live performance by an orchestra.

Obviously the in-game music was entirely electronic, with the exception of choral voices, but I had an idea floating around my brain (somewhat resembling the jelly fish, careening out of control after spinning too quickly) for how to handle an adaptation.

Well, the opportunity finally came thanks to Steven Allen Fox and the [Register or Login to view links] based here in Los Angeles.

On May 16 they performed an all game music concert featuring scores to Afrika, God of War (the Guitar Hero rendition), Final Fantasy VII, World of Warcraft and others. I was proud to feature flOw in that lineup and later cut together a little video combining the concert footage with some in-game footage. I hope you enjoy it!!!

And if you want to...

Video: Galaxii Overflow Nintendo Wii Exploit Preview

50°
288w ago - Today hetoan2 has just released a preview video of his new Nintendo Wii Galaxii Overflow exploit.

To quote: This new wii exploit allows code to be executed by the game. I showed this before loading a level in an earlier video.

Now I have a code that loads a boot.elf from the root of the SD card. This is done by an anomaly in the game which has the game storing data in a buffer area, the data overflows and overwrites adjacent memory.

In this case It allows a modified save to run code, unfortunately, playing on this save file can easily mess with the code due to where the code is loaded from.

The exploit is also very dangerous as turning off during the underlying NAND processes can cause bricks. The only way to get the code to execute is to preform the glitch. It's not easy to do.

Once this is perfected so that it is easier to do and is safer it will be released. Until then enjoy.

Developer: PS3 Flower's Grass Impossible on Other Systems

100°
301w ago - ThatGameCompany describes their dependence on the PlayStation 3's SPU processors in rendering Flower's multitude of grass blades.

To quote: I was incredibly impressed by the graphics of ThatGameCompany's Flower when I reviewed the game in February. There are thousands of grass blades that all interact with you (the wind) during gameplay.

In an interview with Kellee Santiago, co-founder and president of ThatGameCompany, we spoke on the technology and techniques used in rendering the PlayStation Network game. After complementing the game's graphics, I asked how the developer used the PlayStation 3 in ways they couldn't with their first game flOw:

"We learned so much on flOw, especially about SPUs! The grass system really leverages the PS3 to render 200,000 blades of grass simultaneously, and gives the player this sense of blowing wind through them," said Kellee.

When asking for more detail on intensively using the Cell's SPUs, she responded:

"An artist friend of ours came to us, really hoping that we could tell him some clever trick that we used to make it look like we had so many blades of grass. He was reluctant to believe that really John Edwards just made it happen on the SPUs.

"It really would be impossible to make it look the same on any...

Video: Flower 'Remember' Fan Trailer Now Available on PSN

50°
301w ago - Sony PlayStation Network Associate Producer Randall Lowe announced news today of a Flower 'Remember' fan trailer hitting PSN.

To quote: I wanted to introduce you to a great trailer entitled "Remember" that was put together by [Register or Login to view links], with the sound put together by Hybrid Two.

Right after Flower came out last month, Kellee from thatgamecompany came to us and showed us this trailer, asking if we could distribute it on the blog and PSN. After seeing what an amazing job The Duo Group did putting the trailer together, our answer seemed pretty obvious.

The trailer captures so many feelings that the game conveys, it just seemed like a perfect fit. What's even equally amazing is that all of this with nothing but idle screens, which is what are shown when you leave the game sitting for a short bit.

After a little work on the back end, we were able to get the trailer ready and approved for distribution today via the PSN.
