PSN Downtime: Paves the way for new video store?

100°
304w ago - A new menu option has appeared under account management on the PS3 which suggests a movie store is coming up soon.

If you follow this path: XMB > Account Management > Account Management > Activate System, you will see a new option to activate the system for different types of content, for now you can only select game but previously you could only activate the system for all content.

This change suggests that more types of content are coming to the PS3 very soon - perhaps the downtime was for a server upgrade?

With Firmware 2.4 and its host of tasty features due soon, we're quite excited (as usual) about the PS3 this year. We're fully expecting a raft of announcements for the video store and associated partners at E3.

PSN now down, PS3 Firmware 2.40 rumored for July release

100°
304w ago - To quote Lestrade, Community Team Leader at the European PlayStation Forums:

PLAYSTATION®Network Downtime - Tuesday 24 June, 15:00-20:10 BST

The PLAYSTATION Network will be offline for 5 hours today from 3pm BST (4pm CEST) for maintenance work. It's pretty much all behind-the-scenes work and is, most definitely, not the 2.4 System Software update. Sorry, you need to wait a little longer for that one!

During this maintenance, the following online services may not be available:

- PSN account registration,
- PSN account sign-in,
- PSN account management,
- PlayStation Store purchases,
- online gaming, unless you are already logged in at 3pm
- forum login

In related news, self-proclaimed Sony employee Knight613 from GameFAQs states that PS3 Firmware v2.40 was supposed to come out on June 18th, but a bad error was found and needed fixing. Now the date is very early July (1st to 3rd), and the RC release is already ready... so it's just a matter of time.

To quote: 2.40 was supposed to come out June 18th actually... till they found a pretty bad error with the XMB and had to fix it. New date is supposedly July 2ndish,...

Konami announces Metal Gear Solid 4 Add-on

100°
304w ago - Konami has announced that a free downloadable add-on for Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns Of The Patriots will be made available on PS3 on Thursday (June 26th) in Europe.

The Metal Gear Solid 4 Database is a comprehensive archive detailing characters, weapons and plot elements from 1987's original Metal Gear title right through to the most recent title.

According to Konami, the system allows users to search via three central hubs: GENE (a glossary), MEME (which maps the relationships between characters in the series), and SCENE (a timeline for the series).

Users can jump from page to page using specific keywords, with the relevant information appearing instantly. All information relating to Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, however, can only be accessed when the software detects a save data file created when the game has been completed, as to avoid spoiling the final adventure.

A statement from Konami reported: 'Metal Gear Solid 4 Database is a stunning - and completely free - companion to the series, and will answer any question pertaining to Hideo Kojima's games and characters.'

PS3 Home (Closed) BETA Patch v0.9.4.2 coming June 25th

400°
305w ago - PlayStation®Home closed BETA version v0.9.4.2: Welcome to the latest update to PlayStation®Home closed BETA which will be available from Wednesday 25th June.

Below you'll find information on all the changes and additions but we would also like to tell you about our plans for the next few weeks as we are preparing PS®Home for a larger audience and another change will happen shortly.

On about the 10th July we will be moving PS@Home to what will be its long term home and this will entail a new release of this code for you to download. This will also remove all your save data for which we apologise, but this will be the last time that happens and we will also be then setup to expand the beta soon after.

We will confirm dates for this next change shortly but now its time to talk you through the changes to PS@Home in v0.9.4.2

Patching
The first item we need to mention is our new patching system. When the patch is released the first time you connect you will be prompted to get the latest files as normal. If you decline the patch and then still try to log on to PS®Home it will crash. The new patching system is really built for v0.9.4.2 upwards and its compatibility with 0.8.6 is limited.

Sony says that the Disc-based Delivery System will fall

200°
305w ago - Those crazy Sony people. First they tell us that Blu-ray is the wave of the future, and now they say that digital downloads are. Make up your mind! :P

At a developer conference in London, SCEE president David Reeves said that the future is the PlayStation Network. He points out that internal figures that show over 40 per cent of PS3 owners download games direct to their machines.

Reeves told MCV UK: The key to the future is the PlayStation Network, Games put straight onto PSN are the big opportunity.

We do believe that the disc-based delivery system will fall as the power of the network base rises. At the same time, the overall industry growth will continue to go upwards as we push out into emerging markets.

What we don't see is an overall decline in the market. This is a golden era of video games.

So which is it, Sony? Hexus gaming points out that current games may never work as downloads. Think about Metal Gear Solid 4. Could you imagine trying to download that game?

I think there's room for both. Even though they are "proofing itself against the disaster the music industry has found itself in," games are still selling on discs.

I'd say keep the downloads for smaller games, and push the disc for big titles. Do you agree with Sony's...
