PS4: FreeBSD, WebGL, HTML5, Webkit & Save Encryption Development

300°
22w ago - Many are aware Sony's PlayStation 4 video gaming console uses FreeBSD Open Source Software as outlined on Sony's site HERE, and today Software Engineer Don Olmstead briefly discusses WebGL / HTML5 and the PS4 while PS3 hacker kakarotoks confirms PS4 is running Webkit alongside preliminary PS4 Save Encryption from flynhigh09 as detailed below.

From Don Olmstead, to quote: "Now that the #PS4 has been released I can finally start talking about my piece of the puzzle.

When you login to your PS4 you are running #WebGL code. The PlayStation Store, the Music and Video Applications, as well as a good chunk of UX are all rendered within the browser.

I spent a good amount of time tuning our WebGL rendering engine, and I will be speaking at +SFHTML5 about how to optimize WebGL usage within the context of that work. There will be plenty of great tips on how you can speed up your own WebGL applications so get your slot now. And for those of you can't make it in person it will be live streamed on Google Developers Live."

22w ago - Following up on the previous PlayStation 4 Teardown Video and North American PS4 Launch, today iFixit (linked above) has shared a PS4 Teardown and Review video of their own below with pictures available HERE.

To quote: The thorough analysis from the Web site rates the PS4 an 8 out of 10 based on repairability, additionally showing that common hardware issues preventing the PS4 from outputting a video signal to the display is likely the cause of a bent or damaged HDMI port on the console.

The PS4 breakdown also gives a closer look at the user-replaceable hard drive which can be replaced "with any off-the shelf drive you like" as long as it is no thicker than 9.5 mm and no smaller than 160 GB.

Deeper into the belly of the PS4 shows the system's power supply is rated at an AC Input of 100 to 240 volts, meaning "you can take your game around the world with your trusty PS4 always at your side" as...

Since we introduced PlayStation 4 earlier this year, feedback from the gaming community has been phenomenal. With media reviews saying that the PS4 is "just shy of perfection" and that it is "an impressive package for gamers," it's clear that PS4′s horsepower, deep social capabilities, network features, and amazing gameplay have struck a chord.
