Direct PSN Downloads and Online Play through PS3 coming to PSP

50°
293w ago - This fall should prove to be an exciting time for all PSP owners. Sony Computer Entertainment Japan today announced that the long-awaited direct PSP store will launch later this year via a firmware update. Designed as a native PSP application, the store will be accessible straight from the XMB, meaning you'll no longer have to log-on to your PC to download PSP compatible content from the PS store and transfer it through USB connection.

Additionally, Sony dropped word that owners of a PlayStation 3 will be able to use their console to enable online play in select ad-hoc only PSP titles, such as Monster Hunter 2nd G.

Although we can't say for certain, expect the aforementioned services to hit all three major territories – North America, Europe and Japan – at the same time, considering that firmware updates have always been released on a worldwide basis in the past.

PS3 to get exclusive Mirror's Edge DLC via PSN

50°
293w ago - Sony has dismissed reports Mirror's Edge will be a timed PS3 exclusive - but said there will be downloadable content available only via PlayStation Network.

Confusion arose last month after German site Heise Online quoted David Reeves as saying the new EA title will arrive on PS3 first.

EA has since denied the claim and now a Sony spokesperson has done the same, telling Eurogamer, "There was a misunderstanding in terms of the quote that Mirror's Edge is to be a timed exclusive on PS3."

So, the game will be released for PS3, PC and Xbox 360 on the same day - whenever that may be, as EA's still keeping quiet.

However, Sony did confirm that although Mirror's Edge is multi-platform, "PlayStation has an exclusive marketing agreement with EA regarding the title."

Plus, the spokesperson added, "Exclusive downloadable content will be offered on the PlayStation Network."

It's not yet clear what form this content will take, or whether Xbox 360 and PC owners will get their own exclusive goodies.

PSN Cards to Arrive at Blockbuster, 7-Eleven, Rite Aid this September

50°
294w ago - Despite being promised for a "nationwide" rollout last Spring, pre-paid PSN cards are still a scarce commodity. That is, unless you have a Meijer nearby.

Truth be told, many of us don't, so it is reassuring to hear that Sony will be expanding availability of the cards to Blockbuster, 7-Eleven and Rite Aid stores across the continental United States later this September.

This is no doubt good news for those without access to a credit card or debit card account. We just can't fathom why it took them this long though.

To quote: Use your PlayStation®Network card to purchase and download exclusive games, videos and more for your PLAYSTATION®3 and PlayStation® Portable systems!

Visit your local Pamida, Meijer, Blockbuster and Speedway stores to pick up the PSN® card.

Retailers joining in September: Blockbuster, 7-Eleven and Rite Aid

We'll be adding more PLAYSTATION® Network Card retailers soon. Check here for the latest updates.

The reason behind the PSN Maintenance

50°
294w ago - We may have got a bit ahead of ourselves yesterday, with the PSN having maintenance. Speculation immediately spread leading to the Home Beta. It never arrived though, and yes we where disappointed, even though it was the slightest chance.

So this is where the maintenance was really going on, the Metal Gear Servers.

Maintenance completed on the 26/08/2008

The following changes were made during the maintenance:

1) Players will gain 5 reward points when they have finished a round in the automatching lobbies "SNAKE:EX", "LIQUID:EX" and "SOLIDUS:EX".
*The lobbies "SNAKE:EX", "LIQUID:EX" and "SOLIDUS:EX" are only available for users who have bought the "MGO GENE EXPANSION".

2) A new Survival Lobby "MK2″ has been added.

This should have made sense to us from the beginning. If it was being reported by Konami in the first place, then it must have been to do with them.

Looks like we are back to waiting. It has to come some time, they said it will definitely be here this year.

Red Baron Arcade PSN Bound, Drops September 18, 2008

50°
294w ago - Sierra Entertainment today announced that Red Baron Arcade, a World War I based air combat game originally seen on PC, will hit the PlayStation Network later next month on September 18.

In addition to an expansive single-player campaign sprawling 36 missions, the game's online multiplayer aspect features three gameplay modes in all – Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, and Capture the Flag – each with support for up to eight players.

Sounds great, but seeing as the original received fairly mediocre reviews across the board, it'd be wise to try this one before buying.

Thankfully, a playable demo will be available on release day.
