E3 2008: How "Sony" Could Steal the Show!

50°
324w ago - Lets face, E3 is only a short while away, 2 weeks today actually it kicks off with Microsoft's press conference. But what can we expect before E3 with the pre-E3 conferences.

First off, there are some pretty big changes. While Reggie Fils-Aime is still at Nintendo, Phil Harrison and Peter Moore have now bitten the dust from Sony and Microsoft and are now at EA Sports and Atari which means no fun with them this year (Especially Peter).

But what can Sony pull out of the bag for their conference this year? Well, we tell you all here what could possibly happen at that conference on July 15th.

Hardware: This will most likely be the PlayStation 2's final appearence at E3 after the short time they had on it last year. There could be one final swansong game for the PS2 unveiled at E3 to send the console off to Videogaming heaven but that is very doubtful sadly.

As for the PSP, it needs a shunt in the back-side. Not since May of last year have I got a PSP game which was Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops. Since then, nothing has come close to interesting me for the PSP (Bar God of War: Chains of Olympus but I'm too poor to get it right now) and now the PSP is dying because of a lack of games so maybe some new games should be coming out of E3.

Sony announces a Trojan Horse, through PS3 updates

50°
324w ago - Well, they didn't announce one in its current parlance exactly. It's more like the original horse – the one that disgorged the elite Achaeans into Troy. In this case, the Trojan Horse is the PS3 console, and it will be disgorging content. It's not I who made this historical comparison, some analyst did, but I sure wish I had.

The plan was, all along it seems, to roll out the game console and constantly upgrade its capabilities. For example, soon you will be able to get news and weather from your PS3, download feature films, and there will be a photo/movie management app with geotagging and a globe view, not unlike what I saw at the Surface event, but without the (somewhat critical) touchy interface.

Well, I look forward to getting a PS3 one of these days, but they keep making it a sweeter deal so I think I'll just continue to hold off for the moment.

Sony Expands PSN with Man's BFF List

50°
324w ago - Sony upped the ante and changed the game when they expanded their friends list from 50 to 100 recently. Not content to merely keep up with Microsoft's vaunted Live online service, Sony announced another startling addition to the Playstation Network.

XMB in-game? Ability to play music while playing a game? Halo 3? Nope. Even better. Sony announced that in the latest 2.4 firmware update would launch the new Man's Best Friend, Friend's list or the MBFF initiative. What is the MBFF? Why don't we let Sony spokesperson, Angie Shennandough explain.

"While adding additional support for 50 more friends to interact with on PSN, we thought, what about about Man's Best Friend? My circus show poodle, sparkles, is my friend. Why couldn't we allow pets onto PSN, ya know? What about my REAL best friend? The one that I feed, take for walks and play with everyday? Well, we're changing all of that. From now on, you'll have an additional 50 slots to add pets!"

We responded rather curiously to this new "friend's list" and wondered, why pets?

"Well, pets are our friends and we want to know what they're doing at all times, just like our PSN friends, right?" Shennandough explained.

Incredulously she was asked by the press, "Pet's don't...

Sony files Hand-held Touchscreen & Digital Tactile Pixels Patents

50°
324w ago - Panajev2001a posted on NeoGAF (linked above) that Sony was recently granted a patent for what many think could be the next PSP or PSP phone. The [Register or Login to view links] is for a 'hand-held device with touchscreen and digital tactile pixels'.

The patent application states that the device could be used as a "game device, phone, portable media player, email device, Web browser device or navigation device."

Another patent was granted for a "data-transfer using hand-held device." The device would be able to "recognize a remote device from a signal generated by the remote device detector, recognize a gesture from a signal generated by the case motion sensor as a result of motion of the case; and transfer a file with the file transfer device from the memory to the remote device or vice versa in response to recognition of the gesture."

Sony greens the PlayStation 3

50°
324w ago - The PlayStation 3 can be a significant contributor to your power bill, but Sony is reacting to recent criticism with a third-generation hardware version that we will be shipping this holiday season. According to media reports, the updated console will consume about 10 - 20% less power than current systems.

The transition to the new generation will mainly consist of a 65 nm shrink of the RSX GPU, which will join a 65 nm Cell processor. Combined with a new cooling architecture, which replaces copper heatpipes with smaller aluminum plates, the new PS3 is expected to consume only 100 - 120 watts, down from 135 watts today. The initial PS3 with a 90 nm Cell processor was estimated to consume up to 180 watts in normal operation.

It is unclear whether the reduction power consumption will be enough to allow Sony to drop the hardware into a slimmer case.

To us, it seems to be rather unlikely that Sony will change the form factor of the PS3 this year. Such a move is much more once the Cell processor hits 45 nm: Sony claims that a 45 nm CPU will consume 40% less power than the 65 nm version.
