318w ago - Sony boss Chris Deering has surprised many by predicting that the firm's PlayStation 2 console, which launched in the UK in the year 2000, will have more active users than Nintendo's Wii by 2011.

Speaking at the launch of Edinburgh's Interactive Festival, the games chief said all platforms will see major growth by 2011, predicting there will be 2.5 billion gamers worldwide.

Deering said the DS will have rocketed to 150m users, but top of the home console market will be the PS2 with 90m active users.

The Sony boss added the Wii will be second with 80m users, the PS3 and PSP will be at 70m and the Xbox 360 at 40m.

Confirmed: Sony's PlayTV out next month, priced at 69.99 GBP

318w ago - It's now confirmed that Sony's PlayTV, the cool digital TV receiver and recorder (using the PS3's hard drive) is due out next month in UK, France, Italy, Spain and Germany, and will be priced at the bargain price of £69.99.

The hardware has two tuners, so you can watch one station and record another, and you can even watch movies and play games whilst recording TV, so the missus has no room for complaint.

With remote streaming of content to your PSP and freely movable recordings, this is something to look out for when it lands in September.

Finally, Eurogamer has confirmed the date: the 19th of September.

Sony Bring on v2.43 Firmware quickly as 2.42 is all Messed Up

800°
319w ago - Numerous amounts of gamers are reportedly requesting to Sony that they release the new PS3 firmware ASAP as v2.42 is causing them loads of issues. The reported issues range from no discs being read to problems of going online.

To quote: Personally our PS3 is just fine but then we have not had much time with it since the latest firmware. This is what some gamers have reported to PR:

Well this is totally Effed Up!!! My son decided that it would be a good idea to update the PS3 and he did 2 nights ago without me knowing it. Well now ANYTHING BLURAY does NOT play. NOTHING!!! Doesn't even recognize the DAMN Disc!!! Is there anything I can do???

Installed this newest update and now nothing works, can not read disks at all. We have done the system restore, etc. now have to wait while it gets shipped to Sony to fix it.

Very upsetting, fairly new PS3 (5 months) in excellent condition and was working perfectly prior to update. Extremely frustrating.

Sony: Life with PlayStation Delayed, Launches in August

100°
320w ago - Despite being previously announced for a July debut last month by Sony Computer Entertainment president Kaz Hirai, SCEA company senior development manager Noam Rimon has revealed that Life with PlayStation will launch in August.

Rimon attributed the unexpected delay to "a few procedural matters." From what was shown to Japanese press, the service will allow PS3 owners to interact with a virtual Google Maps-esque globe presented in 3D, offering convenient access to weather data and news headlines from around the world.

To quote: We'd like to provide a quick update on Life with PlayStation for PLAYSTATION 3. We know many of you are eager to try out the new service for yourself, but you'll have to hold tight. Due to a few procedural matters, the new service will make its way to PlayStation fans in August.

Rest assured, Life with PlayStation will be a service that introduces a new way to interact with your PS3. By bringing information from around the world into your living room, Life with PlayStation will offer a variety of interactive content and channels on a visually stunning worldwide map interface.

We're focused on continuously expanding the world of PS3 through new services and hope to do just that with the upcoming launch of Life with PlayStation.
