Sony Takes Micro-transactions to New World in PlayStation Home

50°
314w ago - Sony launched its Home virtual world for the PlayStation 3 today, opening up its beta test to all 16 million PS3 owners. We've tested Home in a closed beta so far, but now we will find out if it is ready for millions of people.

Jack Buser is the director of Home for the U.S. market. We talked with him by phone yesterday about Sony's plans for expanding the world and what's there now. [FYI: At the moment, I'm having trouble logging into Home; apparently, it's crowded]

VentureBeat: You took more than 18 months. That's a long time. What was the hard part?
Jack Buser: Something like Home has never been done before. It's a massive undertaking. When you deal as a platform like this, you're blazing new paths with technology and business. There was a lot of heavy lifting. Now we're rolling it out and it's something that can't be experienced anywhere else.

It's not a game. With a game, you create it, launch it and you're done. Home is a platform. A lot of the things will be created by third-party partners. You'll see a lot of people beyond Sony. We had to do all of those application programming interfaces so they could do that.

VB: Can you bring us up to date on who is ready with or preparing content for Home?
JB: Some things we...

Sony PlayStation Home for PlayStation 3 is Live, but Tech Issues

100°
314w ago - From TedTheDog, PlayStation Home Community Manager today:

* Technical updates are progressing and as you have probably seen the 1.03 patch is available for existing users already but the service remains unavailable whilst work is carried out

* Service should be back up everywhere early PM UK time although theres no specific time as theres a long list of actions being worked through in Europe, America, Asia and Japan

* New comers to the service will find the Home icon on their XMB once we activate it. You wont have to look for it, it will be easy to spot and will appear under PlayStationŽNetwork. However, if you are online on your PS3 when we activate it you will need to restart your PS3 for it to appear. Watch these forums for news on when that is. It will work like Folding@Home in that the icon will be there and you'll download the service when you first select it.

Edit 3pm: Still progressing nicely, now on the testing stage. No eta still as I wouldnt want to guess how long it will take for each region to verify its elements are working but we're getting there.

Edit 3:15pm: Not there yet, the testing is still going on, but I wanted to mention a couple of other things that need clarification.

The Far Cry2 and Uncharted spaces will not be...

Sony: PlayStation Home Open Beta Launches Tomorrow

350°
314w ago - To solidify earlier confirmations, PlayStation Home Director Jack Buser stated the following via PS Blog today:

The day we've been waiting for is here! And this is just the beginning...

Today we announced that PlayStation Home will enter into open beta, and will be available to everyone tomorrow. This milestone represents the very beginning of a long journey together, as PlayStation Home is an ever evolving, always changing, organic experience – full of new friends to meet, new events to enjoy, and new content to explore.

If this will be your first time in PlayStation Home, be sure to talk to folks that have been around for a while, as they can show you the ropes. We also have a tutorial built in that will get you started with the controls, as well as help menus for you to reference in the Menu Pad. If you don't have a USB keyboard or Bluetooth headset paired with your PlayStation 3, now is the time to do so - either option will allow you to easily talk and meet everyone.

One of the first things that you'll notice that there are always things going on - parties, tournaments, events - some of which will be announced, and...

Sony: We're Leading User-Generated Content on Consoles

50°
314w ago - Sony's Michael Denny has stated that the company is leading the way when it comes to user-generated content on console systems, following the evident success of titles such as LittleBigPlanet and SingStar.

In LittleBigPlanet alone, around 180,000 levels have already been created and in Buzz, over 100,000 quizzes have been created.

To quote: Sony's Michael Denny has said the company is at the forefront of realising user-generated content on home consoles, following the success of online titles LittleBigPlanet, Buzz and SingStar.

LittleBigPlanet users have created almost 180,000 levels, and played them over 22.4 million times online, according to Sony. Denny has also revealed that Buzz players have created over 100,000 quizzes for the game, which have been played over seven million times.

"I think if you look at Worldwide Studios heritage in Europe, we always - whether it's internally or externally - work on innovative new products," said Denny, in an exclusive interview published today.

"Although we've had the success in the social genre we want to move that on as well, like finding new experiences with LittleBigPlanet and user-generated content. In the console field that's an area we can rightly claim leadership to now. We want to look at more areas of that."

Sony Interested in Offering Downloadable PS2 Titles on PS3

50°
314w ago - Just under a week ago this rumor surfaced, and today Sony Computer Entertainment of America's senior marketing manager John Kohler stated that the company is indeed interested in providing downloadable PlayStation 2 titles on the PlayStation 3 console.

He also went on to reiterate that using a larger 3rd-party hard drive on the PS3 is encouraged, and will not void the warranty in the interview as follows:

Let's talk more about that. I'd love to download my favorite PS2 games onto my PS3's hard drive so I don't have to worry about finding the discs. Will Sony ever provide downloadable PS2 games to play on the PS3?

We're still sorting through that. We're absolutely interested, but there are some technical hurdles there that we have to overcome first. But this is something that we're absolutely interested in. You make good points, there are a lot of people who would be interested in playing the strongest PS2 games on their PS3. Nothing's imminent on that, but it's something we are interested in as well.

With the release of the 160GB PlayStation 3 bundle, is storage space becoming less of an issue for the PS3? I recently installed a 500GB drive in my PS3 and I couldn't...
