650°
277w ago - It appears the PlayStation company is putting its electronics might behind 3D television technology, with the company expected to start selling fancy three-dimensional displays next year–with 3D PlayStation 3 games being readied to capitalize on the technology.

To quote: According to the [Register or Login to view links], Sony boss man Sir Howard Stringer will be announcing the company's plans to invest in 3D LCD TVs at the IFA show in Berlin.

And he'll also be announcing Sony laptop computers, PlayStation 3 games and Blu-ray players that will be compatible with the technology.

With the PS3 already capable of playing 4D games, according to former PlayStation exec Ken Kutaragi, one has to wonder "Why the step back?"

Reports of PS3 Firmware Update 3.0 Freezing Games Surface

1000°
277w ago - Well, it's less than a day after Sony's PS3 Firmware 3.0 update has been released and already there appears to be numerous reports of some PS3 games freezing post-update.

According to Examiner.com (linked above), at least three PS3 titles thus far seem to be adversely affected.

To quote: "One of the biggest games being inflicted by this freezing bug is Uncharted. Numerous forum goers on [Register or Login to view links] are complaining about the freezing issue. There have also been a few reports of the UFC and Bioshock getting similar symptoms.

Whether this is just limited to Uncharted isn't known, but it could very well cause some minor problems to other titles, too. Let's hope Sony finds a cure for this minor inconvenience soon."

A few others are reporting that NFS: Undercover now freezes when playing online and COD4 froze when in a lobby.

That being said, if anyone here has experienced any PS3 game freezing issues since updating to PS3 Firmware 3.0 feel free to reply in the comments below!

PS3 Slim at GameStop, Best Buy Offers Games to Stop Trade-Ins

300°
278w ago - As reported last week, the PlayStation 3 Slim console is now available at GameStop.

When GameHeadzOnline.com (linked above) asked the manager about the PS3 Slim's early arrival, he told them the PS3 Slim consoles "came in today, and they have Sony's blessing to sell them."

In related news, [Register or Login to view links] is reporting that Best Buy is now offering free PS3 games to prevent standard PS3 trade-ins.

To quote: "An internal memo (below), verified independently by a number of employees at different stores, shows that Best Buy is offering people who come into the store to exchange recently purchased PlayStation 3's for the newly released PS3 Slim a choice of a free PlayStation 3 title and price match in lieu of the new slimmer, larger-hard-drive sporting console.

Due to the interest in the new Slim model, the memo warns, stores may see people trying to return their console for the newer model. Before doing the exchange, a store is allowed to offer a choice of a free copy of Infamous, MLB 09 The Show or Killzone 2. Not a bad selection, but is it worth more than the smaller footprint and bigger hard...

New PS3 Bundle Includes MGS4 and Killzone 2 Games

400°
285w ago - Thanks to several Best Buy employees who confirmed the news, a new 80 GB PS3 bundle is set to include MGS4 and Killzone 2 at the standard price of $400.

The new PS3 bundle goes on sale at Best Buy next Sunday.

To quote: Sent in by a Best Buy employee, and confirmed by other BB employees, it's an 80GB PS3 bundled with copies of two of the biggest games on the system: Metal Gear Solid 4 and Killzone 2. All that for the asking price of a standard PS3, $400.

It's like getting a Wii with Twilight Princess and Mario Galaxy, or a 360 with Gears 2 and Halo 3. But perhaps more importantly, it's also one heck of a saving; perhaps Best Buy need to clear out their stock of 80GB PS3s for oh, I don't know, a new PS3?

Sony CEO: PS3 Motion Controller Can Work with Existing Games

400°
288w ago - Speaking to [Register or Login to view links], the president and CEO of SCEA Jack Tretton promised that the PS3 motion controller (and its games library) will be far more flexible and diverse than what one would find on Nintendo's machine.

To quote: "Personally, it's very difficult for me to perceive God of War 3 being played with the Wii controller," he said.

"It's a different experience that doesn't lend itself to certain types of games. [But] I think our [motion] controller can be used with every game that's on the system now - and every game we're working on."

In fact, Tretton goes so far as to say compatibility with current PS3 games is "absolutely conceivable."

Without being able to go hands-on with the device, it's hard to judge. Are there sufficient buttons and sticks to make a 1:1 translation between DualShock and the motion controllers? Time will tell...
