Tokyo Games Show 2009 - What Fans Can Expect from Sony

250°
274w ago - As a follow-up to the initial announcement on Sony's PS3 and PSP game lineup, today Examiner.com (linked above) outlines what fans can expect at Tokyo Games Show 2009.

For those unaware, the event is taking place from September 24th to the 27th, and the special keynote address is scheduled for the first day. To quote:

Gran Turismo 5
After being in development for years, it looks like Gran Turismo 5 may finally be coming out relatively soon. With a 2009 release date a possibility, you can expect Sony to give a huge blowout of game's features at the Tokyo Game Show, including the exciting head-tracking mode. Gran Turismo 5 is expected to be a top-seller for the PlayStation 3; so Sony should be giving the full spotlight to their exclusive first-party title.

PSP Go
Although it may be hard to imagine, the PSP is more popular in Japan than the PlayStation 3. With the launch of the PSP Go quickly closing in, Sony must make a strong last impression at the Tokyo Game Show. Although the software lineup will no doubt be strong (with Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker and Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep leading the way), Sony must convince prospective buyers that the new PSP model...

Video: PS3's New 3D Mode, Coming in 2010 to All Existing Games

650°
276w ago - Today Engadget (linked above) was able to test out Wipeout HD on Sony's PlayStation 3 being played in 3D, and managed to record a video of it below.

To quote: "Especially for something like Wipeout HD, whose neon-infused tracks make for an almost too convenient example of rapidly approaching vanishing points, we'd say 3D could really be a quasi-"killer app" for consoles going forward - especially if those fancy new motion controllers don't catch on for Microsoft and Sony.

In many ways, 3D just seems to make more sense in a video game than for a movie, and the whole problem of finding content to deliver in the format has already been solved: a software update for the PS3 sometime in 2010 will enable it to provide a 3D viewing experience to "all" existing games on the system.

We're sure there will be some exceptions, but it sounds very promising. The console itself pumps out a quite regular signal over HDMI, which the TV syncs up with your 3D glasses. A 200Hz TV, for instance, alternates 1080p frames, with 100Hz for each eye.

Of course, you'll need a brand new TV, but at least it won't be restricted to just Sony televisions."

Q-Games: Star Dust, Dynamic PS3 Themes and Little Tikiman

100°
276w ago - Today Q-Games Ltd. President and Executive Producer Dylan Cuthbert has shared some updates on Star Dust, Dynamic PS3 Themes and their favorite Little Tikiman, as follows:

Well, Q-Games has been busy again, and not just on PixelJunk. You may have noticed some new additions to the PlayStation 3's XMB (Xross Media Bar) with the latest firmware update to version 3.00.

Well, we're behind the "star dust" and if you haven't noticed it yet, you're in for a nice surprise. We wanted to implement something like the beginning of the movie [Register or Login to view links] but they wouldn't let us go quite that far, so we settled on the subtle but pretty dust effect you can see now. If you shake the Wireless Controller, you can move them about a bit, as if they are being carried by eddies in the wind.

Also, there are these new things called Dynamic Themes, and we're proud to say that this is a system we were involved in developing. Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) wanted to spice up the background a bit and static pictures just didn't cut the mustard.

So we collaborated with them to make a system where developers can display what they want and animate and move them around. This definitely adds a little life to the PS3's background so be sure...

Videos: PS3 Slim Loads Games & Movies Faster on Firmware 3.0

800°
276w ago - In videos from last weekend, we learned that the PS3 fat boots itself faster than the PS3 Slim, but the Slim had the edge when it came to loading games.

Now with new PS3 Firmware 3.0, the PS3 Slim loads games even faster... up to 25% faster according to [Register or Login to view links] on a Devil May Cry 4 installation.

YouTube user PS3slimComparison did a PS3 Slim Firmware 2.80 vs 3.00 Uncharted 1 level load comparison, with the same settings on both consoles and same 7200RPM hard drive installed on each.

To quote: "In this demonstration, conducted by the same source as the original testing, we see the PS3 Slim (Firmware 2.8) load Uncharted: Drake's Fortune against the PS3 Slim (Firmware 3.0).

The difference is considerable (you know, for adjustments to software alone), and we don't see why most other games wouldn't encounter similar loading improvements."

Finally, in the second video (below) it appears Blu-ray movies also load faster on PS3 Slim Firmware 3.0 versus...
