Sony Could Clean Up with Backwards Compatibility on PS3

400°
305w ago - What is it above all else that the PlayStation 3 is missing? Access to the vast PS2 library. Backwards compatibility is the most obvious chink in the PS3 armour.

It is a strange strategic decision by Sony not to have a download service running by now considering that rivals Nintendo and Microsoft both have backwards compatibility in their respective consoles. The replaceable HDD on the PS3 makes the system ideal for a download service as space shouldn't really become an issue.

Lets briefly cover why such a service would be a guaranteed hit:

•The PS2 Library - There are thousands of games in the PS2 library and there are many classic games among that number. Giving gamers the chance to replay or experience for the first time games like Kingdom Hearts, ICO, or Shadow of the Colossus is surely a recipe for success.

•Cheap games - Obviously the pricing in such a service would be the most important consideration. Pricing would have to be very competitive. Even though Sony could populate the service with classic games the fact remains that the majority of them will be several years old. That has to be taken into consideration above all else so I would suggest a maximum price of €9.99.

I think that would be reasonable as you can already get PSOne games on the...

Sony PlayStation Home Update: Ninja And Pirate Costumes

50°
306w ago - PlayStation Home Community Manager CydoniaX shared news today of new virtual items at the PlayStation Home mall, including ninja and pirate costumes as follows:

We've got some big plans for PlayStation Home coming up, some of which may involve ninjas and street fighters. We thought that would grab your attention. It did for us at SCEA.

And as we continue to expand upon existing content with PlayStation Home spaces, we've introduced a leaderboard for the Red Bull Air Race in the Red Bull space.

We recently made the most of these new leaderboards with a contest to see who could get the highest scores. Shopaholics rejoice too, you'll find some cool new virtual items at the mall, including ninja and pirate costumes.

As you may have heard, Capcom is set to expand its blockbuster franchises globally with Street Fighter and Resident Evil within PlayStation Home.

Resident Evil 5 fans can launch straight from PlayStation Home into the game. And for the Street Fighter fans, Capcom is bringing Street Fighter IV costumes and additional themed content to PlayStation Home, much of which will be unlocked through in-game actions.

I know that is a lot to digest, but that's not all ... in the next few months, gamers will find even more clothing, furniture...

Rumor: The Sony Switch to Intel's Larrabee Chip for PS4

50°
306w ago - Following up on the [Register or Login to view links] from a few days ago: Sony will use Intel's Larrabee graphics chip in its upcoming PlayStation 4.

To quote: We know for a fact that Jeffery Katzenberg at DreamWorks likes Larrabee- a lot. That apparently was one of the reasons DreamWorks dropped Advanced Micro Devices.

So, chalk that up as one big win for Intel's somewhat-murky next-generation graphics chip due late this year or 2010.

Now Sony? A report this week in the U.K.-based technology Web site [Register or Login to view links] claims Sony favors Larrabee over Nvidia for its PlayStation 4. (The other major piece of silicon used in the current PlayStation is a Cell processor developed jointly by IBM, Sony, and Toshiba.)

For the record, an Intel spokesperson said the company "cannot comment on rumor or speculation." Sony in Europe reportedly didn't mince words, however, comparing the report to some of the 20th century's great fiction. Though another [Register or Login to view links] comment from Sony is more insipid and PR-like.

Sony: PlayStation 3 is Future-Proof, Will Last Longer Than PS2

400°
306w ago - Against all odds, the PlayStation 2 is still hanging around, though it's ailing rapidly. According to Sony though, the PlayStation 3 will last even longer. To quote:

Speaking to T3 via [Register or Login to view links], a Sony rep made a statement that discourages the thought of expecting a PlayStation 4 anytime soon.

"PS2 was still going strong after eight years, and with the power the Cell processor provides, not to mention the fact that PS3 is inherently future-proof, we see the PS3 sales curve far outlasting that of PS2."

Meanwhile, most analysts seem to think that new consoles will be hitting in 2011 or 2012. The PlayStation 3 is indeed a powerful console, so it'll be interesting to see if developers can continue unlocking the machine's full potential four or even five years down the road.
