Sony Denies Reports Regarding Major Division Shutdowns

50°
297w ago - According to a story published by [Register or Login to view links], insider sources from Sony Corp. say the company is in for some "sacred cow-slaying" cost cuts.

This alleged drastic restructuring goes so far as to suggest that there will be closures of company factories and that major divisions will be shut down. This news comes roughly a month after it was revealed that Sony had plans to cut 8,000 jobs from its non-SCEA workforce.

However, as MCV (linked above) reports, Sony is already denying the supposed corporate restructuring. "We do not plan to announce additional restructuring measures at this time," said Sony spokesman Atsuo Omagari. "We don't have any such plan."

Whether true or not, Sony's corporate outlook is rather dire; analysts are saying that a radical restructuring is long overdue. They suggest that Sony needs to focus on content and software, and to give Sir Howard Stringer complete control of the business.

"The most important thing is that, to improve organizational strength in the areas of development, purchasing and marketing, it will be necessary to further concentrate power in the hands of [Sir Howard] and unless this is achieved we believe [Sony] will be unable to...

Gamer States Sony Discriminates with the Word 'Gay' from Home

100°
297w ago - A gamer believes Sony is discriminating as they have banned words such as gay, lesbian, and bisexual from names of clubs or in postings in club forums as part of PlayStation Home.

To quote: Michael Marsh, an 18-year-old gamer from Norwalk, Conn., wanted to set up a gay/straight alliance club in PlayStation Home, Sony's new free 3-D virtual world component for the PlayStation 3.

The problem was that the words he was using - "gay," "lesbian" and "bisexual" - were being filtered from text chats and were not being allowed in the naming of clubs or in postings in club forums.

Marsh, who is straight but supports gay rights, said he raised the issue with Home community managers during the private beta test, but the problems persisted after the public beta introduction of Home on Dec. 11.

"I can understand if they're filtering out profanity, but if feel like it's discrimination," Marsh said. "By blocking a word like 'gay,' which is a preferred term by the gay community, you're encouraging it as a bad word."

Sony to Cancel the PlayStation 3 - Do People Actually Think This?!

250°
297w ago - PlayStation Gamer UK Writes: While checking the Web sites stats as I like to do from time to time, I did come across some rather interesting information.

Looking at the section which tells me what terms people used in search engines before coming across PlayStation Gamer UK. There were the normal "PlayStation UK" and "killzone 2 pre-order" terms, the one which stood out the most however was that was a considerable amount of people (so much so it was the second most searched term before visiting this Web site) entering "Will Sony Cancel the PlayStation 3".

While clearly the people entering these searches are most likely not that familiar with the gaming industry and clearly unaware that the PlayStation 3 has seen solid sales since its release and like all consoles isn't going to go everywhere.

It does peg the question why did they ask it in the first place. After looking into it there are some reasons why they may ask the question.

The first of which is the recent NPD data which has been released for November and a lot of the mainstream news outlets have taken this data and focused on how the PlayStation 3 sales were down on this time last year in the US.

Now the average person may read this and come to the quick conclusion that this means that sony...

Sony's PlayStation 3 Beats the Nintendo Wii on Internet Use

500°
297w ago - Research from [Register or Login to view links] finds that PlayStation 3 users are far more likely to use their console for Internet browsing than those with a Nintendo Wii.

The gap between the PS3 and Wii is pretty big, as the Wii has 0.01% of the Internet browser market share, while the PS3 has 0.04%.

To quote: With more than 30 million Wiis sold into homes in its life to date compared to 16 million PS3s and both with Internet browsers, you might expect that Nintendo's family-friendly box to have a larger 'market share' on the Net than the former.

You'd be wrong. A new report from Marketshare indicates that PlayStation 3 owners like to use their console (sorry, Interactive Entertainment System) for Web use than those people playing with their Wiis in December 2008.

With Microsoft's Xbox 360 not having a browser, it doesn't figure in the stats.

The gap between the PS3 and Wii is huge. Nintendo's machine gets 0.01% of 'operating system market share' compared to the PS3's 0.04%. It might look small - but it actually means that PS3 users use the Internet 400% more than Wii users.

Sony's PlayStation 3 Versus Microsoft's XBox 360 Console in 2009

550°
298w ago - In this feature we're going to leave all the fanboyism at the door.

Despite the fact that this is a PS3 Web site I do take some pride in knowing that we don't pander to Sony and certainly don't pretend Microsoft don't exist: I personally keep both consoles (and a Wii) at the side of the television and of late it's the 360 that has seen the most playtime, my recent acquisition of PlayTV notwithstanding.

Why? Perhaps it's just a case of catching up with all the Xbox games I've missed whilst hammering the hell out of the PS3 for the last 12 months, catching up with Gears or getting involved with the whole Community Games angle, or perhaps it's just nice to have the option to play all the games released.

But such whimsical fence-sitting doesn't help with this article, which is intended to do just one thing: decide the victor of 2009. Yes, there's going to be an awful lot of educated guesswork here, because naturally we don't know everything that the major players have planned for us this year, but we know one thing for sure: not a great deal will change from 2008.

Sony will still promise the earth, extend the firmware to new realms and delay key titles beyond belief, and Microsoft will do pretty much the same - it's the way things are in the world of consoles...
