Sony Warns of $2.9 bln Loss, Steps Up Restructuring Plan

250°
297w ago - Following up the [Register or Login to view links] from earlier this week, today Sony has warned that it could post a massive $2.9 billion annual operating loss due to decreasing demand and a stronger yen.

It also revealed fresh restructuring steps to revive its ailing electronics operations, to quote:

Sony Corp warned it would post a record $2.9 billion annual operating loss due to sliding demand and a stronger yen, and unveiled fresh restructuring steps to revive its ailing electronics operations.

The operating loss will be Sony's first in 14 years, underscoring deepening troubles for a company that has fallen behind Apple Inc's (AAPL.O) iPod in portable music, Nintendo Co (7974.OS) in videogames, and is losing money on flat TVs.

"While these are extremely challenging times, we must be fully prepared to embrace the opportunities that await us once these dark economic clouds begin to part," Sony Chief Executive Howard Stringer told a news conference on Thursday.

"We simply have no alternative but to dramatically change the fundamental ways we view our business as well as the way we create, manufacture and distribute our products," Stringer said.

Sony to Announce Restructuring Details This Week

50°
297w ago - The Financial Times reports that Sony is set to announce details of its restructuring plan this week.

Despite up to six plants closing and the cutting of 16,000 jobs, analysts have warned that this not enough and Sony many need more drastic measures.

To quote: Sony Corp will announce details of its restructuring plan this week amid internal company resistance to job cuts in Japan, the Financial Times said on Wednesday.

The maker of Bravia LCD TVs, Cyber-shot digital cameras and PlayStation game consoles outlined plans last month that called for curbing investment, closing five to six plants and cutting 16,000 jobs to save $1.1 billion a year in costs.

But analysts and other industry watchers have said Sony will likely need more drastic measures to fight a crippling appreciation in the yen and a sharp slowdown in demand for electronics as the global recession spreads.

"Sony's not in a position to halt all domestic production but it has to do something that drastic," said Mitsushige Akino, chief fund manager at Ichiyoshi Investment Management.

Confirmed: Tales of Vesperia Coming to Sony's PlayStation 3

200°
297w ago - According to the latest Famitsu Issue, Tales of Vesperia will be coming to the PS3 with extra content.

To quote, roughly translated: Namco Bandai has released a PDF on its website in Japanese, among other things, a list of projects that the company intends to launch the Japanese market over the year 2008.

The big surprise we found in the Tales of Vesperia, a title that was announced so far as Xbox 360 exclusive, but according to this list will also come to PlayStation 3.

Probably is a similar kind of exclusivity to the Eternal Sonata, a title which despite having been announced yet reached the market.

The rest of the list includes Soul Calibur IV (PS3, 360), Afro Samurai (PS3, 360), Naruto Ultimate Ninja 3 (PS2), a Dragon Ball DS, Super Robot Wars Z (PS2), Dragon Ball Z Burst Limit ( PS3, 360), Family Trainer (Wii), Taiko: Drum Master (Wii), a new release of the Tales of series... para DS, Naruto (PS3) y Gundam (PSP). DS, Naruto (PS3) and Gundam (PSP).

Portable games are still entitled to be determined, it will have to wait for further announcements to know what we will be preparing Namco Bandai for the coming months.
