Sony: PlayStation 3 is Still in the Early Adopter Phase

200°
289w ago - The PlayStation 3 is "still in its early adopter phase", Sony has claimed, despite the console being out for over two years.

Speaking in an [Register or Login to view links] with Gamasutra, John Koller, director of hardware marketing at SCEA, said that the kind of person who was interested in the PS3 was "tech-oriented" and that for them, the console's main appeal was its "multi-functionality".

Sony's PS3 has come under fire from a number of analysts in recent months, many of whom have pointed towards its high price as explanation of its current third place sales position behind the Nintendo Wii and the Xbox 360.

Sony, for its part, has continued to resist calls for a price cut, pointing towards the PS3's high-value as a Blu-ray player and powerful games machine.

.hack Brings the World to Sony's PlayStation Portable

289w ago - Siliconera writes: After two sagas of PlayStation 2 games Namco Bandai is taking the .hack series to the PSP with .hack//Link.

By the title and character art alone this looks like it's based on the manga of the same name.

One thing for sure is the characters are the same. However, the Famitsu photo is too blurry to make out any critical details about the gameplay or the developer.

Hey, maybe .hack//Link is CyberConnect2's [Register or Login to view links].

We'll find out for sure on Friday!

Sony Takes Legal Action Against Datel for PSP Lite Blue Tool

50°
289w ago - Just under [Register or Login to view links] Datel announced that the PSP-3000 was hacked via Service Mode using a device known as their Lite Blue Tool.

However, Sony Europe is now taking legal action against Datel for their much-hyped PSP 'Lite Blue Tool' Battery.

Datel notes that they "will inform customers about availability of this product when this situation has been resolved" so perhaps it will eventually hit the market.

Currently, the new 'alternative' is known as the Max Power Digital, which will put the PSP-2000 in Service Mode and serve only as a battery replacement for the PSP-3000.

Sony Chart Reminds Gamers of the PlayStation 3's Offerings

100°
289w ago - An external SCEA PR rep has told Edge-Online why a chart (below) was released by Sony indicating that the PS3 was cheaper than Microsoft's XBox 360 and Nintendo's Wii console.

The rep noted that it was thought to be a good time to remind everyone of "our strong offerings".

To quote: An external SCEA PR rep From The agency Porter Novelli told us the company released the chart because they "thought it would be a good time just to remind everyone of our strong offerings," which automatically implies that they feel people have either forgotten about the PS3's inherent value or never seriously considered the PS3's value, due to the higher price tag.

It's highly likely that amidst this PS3 price-drop rumoring that Sony wanted to tell the core audience, "Hey, don't wait for a drop, it's a steal at $399, honest."

I'd argue that today PS3 is a fine value, on par with Xbox 360, particularly for gamers in 2009, when it appears that Sony's internal developers will really begin to bear fruit.

Nevertheless, I'm glad I'm not the one that has to figure out how to get that value message across to consumers.

Sony Giving Away Money in PlayStation Home

100°
289w ago - If you're in one of the regions supported by Sony Computer Entertainment Asia you can get [Register or Login to view links] if you track down the money god avatar.

$10 HKD isn't much, it's like $1.30 US, but it's interesting to see Sony run such a promotion. Sure, it's not enough to buy a PlayStation Network game, but you can get a virtual item by finding the money god. Or you can save your money and hope Sony Computer Entertainment Asia runs more of these so you can get a free game.

No word if Sony is going to try this strategy in other regions of if this is only a Sony Computer Entertainment Asia strategy.
