Sony Refuses to Replace Backwards-Compatible PS3 Consoles

750°
297w ago - A TAWKN (linked above) user who goes by dn2500f has had his 80GB PS3 with backwards-compatibility at Sony's repair center in Ontario, Canada for three weeks now.

Sony apparently only offered to give him a new model 80GB PS3, which does not include PS2 support (over 1,900 PS2 games that he can no longer play).

To quote: Today he called in to get a status update and was told that it was beyond repair, and because Sony doesn't make that model anymore they can't replace it... despite the fact that he bought four years' worth of Sony Care extended warranty for it, for a total of five years.

They offered to give him a new model 80GB PS3.

He argued with them that he is not just losing a PS3, but PS2 support (that's over 1900 PS2 games that he can no longer play), extra USB ports, plus the built-in card readers. Sony's reply? Too freaking bad. (Not a direct quote, obviously).

This guy is very angry at Sony, and rightfully so. They didn't offer him anything but a far inferior model than what he bought about 12 months ago, which he says is unacceptable - and I agree.

At the VERY least, they should be trying to make up for this to him and other users who paid $100 extra for a console that has only one life left to live.

If I were in his situation,...

"We really want our consumers to have the ability to interact with our brands and characters in ways other than just on screen. We feel Target Entertainment has the vibrancy and experience to help us do this successfully."

Global brand director, Helen Howells, of Target Entertainment Group, added: "To work with a brand like PlayStation, and its range of products, is a great opportunity for us. Sony Ziris Canvas Uses PlayStation 3 Power

297w ago - At last week's Screen Expo, Sony has presented the latest application of its digital software Ziris Canvas which incorporates the PS3.

Ziris can display content on HD screens using any layout size, shape and orientation and the spatial configuration can vary immensely.

To quote: The Cell Processor power within the PS3 gives Ziris Canvas stability and high image quality.

Josh Honda, digital signage solutions senior manager, Sony Professional, said: "The product is a great example of using a Sony consumer technology, PS3, in a serious business application, to create stable performance and outstanding computing power."

Whilst users are free to create their own layouts the system does come with pre-configured designs. Customers are also able to create targeted playlist schedules for playout using Ziris Create, enabling adaptation of content dependent on changing situations thus increasing relevancy to the audience.

Sony: Microsoft Writes Checks for Games Due to Insecurity

50°
297w ago - CEA hardware marketing boss John Koller has told VG247 that Microsoft's apparent need to pay for exclusivity on certain products - such as the Lost and Damned - is borne from a self-perceived lack of strength in its first-party line-up.

To quote: "Microsoft has had a much more lenient policy to writing checks than we do," he said.

"We don't feel the need to write checks necessarily with every publisher, like they did with the Lost and Damned and some other titles, because we feel very strongly in our first-party line-up.

"I think it's safe to say that we'd put our first-party line-up against anyone's, and Microsoft and other manufacturers probably lead a little bit when they're writing checks about how they feel about their own internal line-up."

Microsoft reportedly loaned Rockstar $50 million for two episodes of GTA IV DLC, although the figure's never been confirmed.

The first episiode, The Lost and Damned, is rumoured to have sold in the region of 1 million units. Koller was speaking at GDC last month.

Rumor: Is NetFlix Coming to Sony's PS3 and the Nintendo Wii?

50°
298w ago - CNET (linked above) believes they have spotted a sign indicating that NetFlix is destined for sony's PS3 and the Nintendo Wii console.

A job posting denotes that the NetFlix team is looking for someone to to lead the gaming platforms team, to quote:

In case you're having trouble reading the job description above, here's the important part:

We are looking for a hands-on leader and innovator. We seek deep experience developing and testing media rich applications on current generation gaming consoles.

Candidates will be technical, strong leaders, and execution focused. Expect to help build a small technology team to rapidly prototype and iterate on a variety of platforms.

The key phrase is "a variety of platforms," which one would assume means both home and mobile gaming consoles. You could also throw the iPhone into the mix, though you'd have to stream via Wi-Fi, not a cellular connection, because AT&T has bandwidth restrictions on streaming video.
