More PlayStation 3's Sold Worldwide in Q2 than XBox 360

100°
326w ago - Total sales figures for both PS3 and XBox show that Microsoft's price cut was not enough to win the quarter.

Sony's recently revealed Q2 earnings report reveals that the PS3 has sold 2.43 million units worldwide during the three month period ending September 30th.

That's an improvement of over a million on its Q2 2007 sales figures and brings the number of PS3s around the world to a total of 16.84 million. Software sales for the console have also more than double from the same period last year to 21.1 million.

Microsoft recently reported that the 360 sold 2.2 million consoles worldwide during the Q2 FY period, just shy of PS3 sales despite a price cut which came into effect in early-mid September.

Q3 is going to be an interesting battleground, what with Sony being adamant about not cutting price. We're intrigued to see whether LittleBigPlanet and the PS3's other big exclusives (we'd love to see some real marketing for Valkyria Chronicles -- that game deserves to sell well) will push boxes this quarter despite the 360's price cut momentum. Only time will tell.

PlayStation 3 to get More 3rd Party Support in 2009

100°
326w ago - A few months ago, the gaming community had its mind set that this generation is the end of 3rd party exclusives, and there will be a big push towards multiplatform.

Over the past year, there were a lot of multiplatform games released from the older Oblivion to the more contemporary Call of Duty, and to the more recent Bioshock.

There seems to be an agreement amongst gamers that the Xbox 360 always had the better version of the game because it's easier to program for, and of course sometimes that is true, but I also picked the above 3 examples to illustrate the point that sometimes the sheep mentality can be quite deceiving.

The PlayStation 3 version is not "always" the worst one, and sometimes it may even be the preferred version due to the free cost of PSN or the addition of Trophy system (if you prefer it over the Achievement system on your Xbox 360).

Or even better graphics (Oblivion), or extra contents (Bioshock/Eternal Sonata). Of course, some of these games are late to the table and I will not argue with you that if you had both machines you would have probably already played Bioshock. But setting these matters aside there is something else worth discussing today.

There is another misconception that the XBox 360 was getting all the 3rd party love, with...

New Wii System Menu Update Blocks Homebrew Channel & More

50°
327w ago - Although still labeled as System Menu 3.3, this Nintendo Wii update officially includes the renaming of Wii Points to Nintendo Points and cosmetic changes to some of the menu icons.

Unofficially, the update is said to block the Wii Homebrew Channel and more as follows:

- This blocks new installations of anything fakesigned, that is, Homebrew Channel (both new installs and updates), wads (legal and illegal), Starfall, cIOS, anything that installs IOSes secretly like AnyRegion Changer or AnyTitle Deleter, xyzzy and DVDX (used for apps which have DVD support). This list is not exhaustive, but please add to it if you think of anything else.
- This also blocks access to /dev/flash. This means raw nand dumping utilities no longer work.
- If something is already installed then it isn't affected, like Homebrew Channel, etc.
- The homebrew developers are already planning how to work around this update.
- You currently need this update to access the Wii Shop Channel.
- If you already have the Homebrew Channel and DVDX, and aren't planning to install anything big that will affect your Wii, then you are most likely unaffected. Normal everyday apps such as Homebrew Browser are completely unaffected as long as you already have the Homebrew Channel.
- It updates all IOSes with...

Valkyria Chronicles Update: Demo Arrives, Q&A, and More!

50°
327w ago - Associate Producer Christopher Kaminski from Sega of America shared the following today via PS Blog:

Hi Everyone!

I'm Christopher Kaminski, the US Producer on Valkyria Chronicles, here to update you on a couple of things. First of all, we've released a few new trailers recently that showcase some of the main characters: Squad 7, Welkin and Alicia. As we approach launch, we'll be showing off more of the key units who appear in the game's imminent release!

Now let's dig into the meat of this post. I'd like to tell you how the pre-launch event we had at the Sony PlayStation Store in San Francisco last month went!

Eager fans lined up to meet and get an autograph from our most-esteemed Producer from SEGA Studios Japan, Ryutaro Nonaka. Each person walked away with a limited edition autographed box sleeve, a handy item to have when they pick up a copy of Valkyria when it comes out in less than two weeks (November 4th!).

We even had Alicia Melchiott to greet the fans!

This was a great opportunity for everyone that attended the event to get a little sneak preview hands-on with the demo before anyone else. For those of you curious about how Valkyria Chronicles plays, it's been available on Qore for the past 2 weeks, and hits the wider PSN today.
