New Wii System Menu Update Blocks Homebrew Channel & More

50°
322w ago - Although still labeled as System Menu 3.3, this Nintendo Wii update officially includes the renaming of Wii Points to Nintendo Points and cosmetic changes to some of the menu icons.

Unofficially, the update is said to block the Wii Homebrew Channel and more as follows:

- This blocks new installations of anything fakesigned, that is, Homebrew Channel (both new installs and updates), wads (legal and illegal), Starfall, cIOS, anything that installs IOSes secretly like AnyRegion Changer or AnyTitle Deleter, xyzzy and DVDX (used for apps which have DVD support). This list is not exhaustive, but please add to it if you think of anything else.
- This also blocks access to /dev/flash. This means raw nand dumping utilities no longer work.
- If something is already installed then it isn't affected, like Homebrew Channel, etc.
- The homebrew developers are already planning how to work around this update.
- You currently need this update to access the Wii Shop Channel.
- If you already have the Homebrew Channel and DVDX, and aren't planning to install anything big that will affect your Wii, then you are most likely unaffected. Normal everyday apps such as Homebrew Browser are completely unaffected as long as you already have the Homebrew Channel.
- It updates all IOSes with...

Valkyria Chronicles Update: Demo Arrives, Q&A, and More!

50°
322w ago - Associate Producer Christopher Kaminski from Sega of America shared the following today via PS Blog:

Hi Everyone!

I'm Christopher Kaminski, the US Producer on Valkyria Chronicles, here to update you on a couple of things. First of all, we've released a few new trailers recently that showcase some of the main characters: Squad 7, Welkin and Alicia. As we approach launch, we'll be showing off more of the key units who appear in the game's imminent release!

Now let's dig into the meat of this post. I'd like to tell you how the pre-launch event we had at the Sony PlayStation Store in San Francisco last month went!

Eager fans lined up to meet and get an autograph from our most-esteemed Producer from SEGA Studios Japan, Ryutaro Nonaka. Each person walked away with a limited edition autographed box sleeve, a handy item to have when they pick up a copy of Valkyria when it comes out in less than two weeks (November 4th!).

We even had Alicia Melchiott to greet the fans!

This was a great opportunity for everyone that attended the event to get a little sneak preview hands-on with the demo before anyone else. For those of you curious about how Valkyria Chronicles plays, it's been available on Qore for the past 2 weeks, and hits the wider PSN today.

Bleszinski Tells All: GoW 3, The Movie, Design Tips, PS3 & More!

323w ago - This man wants you to know his name. He is the face of Gears of War and its creator Epic Games and is clearly the most gregarious of the new breed of developers that are taking video gaming to the masses.

Call him Cliffy B, call him Dude Huge, or call him Mr. Bleszinski, he has something to say and he want you to hear it. So read on as we discuss everything from the secrets of great game design to the Gears of War movie, chat about the Xbox 720, the PS3, Gears of War 3, Marcus Fenix starring in a platform game and even discover what weapon he uses to pick up chicks!

Chris Stead: We've played the first Act of Gears of War 2 - everything is bigger, meaner and prettier. Does it all come down to the middleware?

Cliff Bleszinski: I think it comes down to having an extraordinary team. It is a combination of that and having the best tools in the business that enable our designers to rapidly prototype. Lee Perry, our senior gameplay designer, had a rough of the shield mauler boomer in like a day and he had the shield swinging around and he just passed that concept straight to the programmers and they just code it up.

So it is a combination of that and thinking quick on our feet and being well managed, as well as having what I believe are the best artists in entertainment....

Capcom-Themed PSN Store Coming in November, More to Follow

50°
323w ago - Capcom product manager John Diamonon revealed during a recent interview with Edge Online that a Capcom-themed PSN store will open this November. The store's layout will essentially be the same as Sony's, but with Capcom-specific assets and titles.

To quote: "Out of all of the third-party companies making use of the digital space, [Sony] recognizes Capcom is one of the best partners for content," said John Diamonon, product manager on all Capcom digital titles.

He said that Sony approached Capcom with the idea. "We're supporting PlayStation Network like no other company," Diamonon claimed.

Capcom expects the store to launch in early November. Diamonon acknowledged that other publishers will offer dedicated storefronts in the future.

Deus Ex 3 set as Prequel, Gameplay Changes and More

50°
324w ago - Well it's about time we heard more on Deus Ex 3 (PS3, 360). First off, for those who are worrying for the third installment of the controversial series, put your minds at ease: the creators of the original game gave Deus Ex 3 their blessings.

The latest issue of PC Zone reveals details on the game's story, protagonist, and gameplay, and it sounds like a worthy addition to the franchise. The story was drafted in consultation from the original writer Sheldon Pacotti, and with the blessing of the original creators, Harvey Smith and Warren Spector.

Deus Ex 3 promises a "powerful, layered" plot set in 2027, which sets the game as a prequel to the first game whose events were set in the 2050s. PCZ describes the dystopian future in which the story is set:

Deus Ex 3's vision of the future sees holographic screens flicker atop ferries moving back and forth in front of the Shanghai skyline, now split into two layers with the rich on the top and the poor in perpetual twilight below

The game will have you step into the shoes of Adam Jensen, an average joe private security officer at a technology lab. The lab specializes in biomechanical augmentations, the technology that eventually led to the nanotech in the first Deus Ex game.

His life spins out of his control...
