Sony's PS4 and Microsoft's XBox 720 to be Shaped by the Wii?

550°
285w ago - In the dark days of the GameCube, amidst Internet rumblings of Nintendo going third-party, a little white box was being secretly developed in the inner sanctums of Nintendo.

Having already launched the strange yet undeniably appealing DS, this new console had a working codename of Revolution.

Nintendo dropped that moniker for the more market-friendly and more perverse title of the Nintendo Wii. Revolutions were scary they said, revolutions were about bloodshed, terrorist organizations and babies crying. Nintendo just wanted everyone to play.

Controllers are scary, like the cockpit of a flaming 747. People just want to throw around their television remotes and Nintendo happily provided.

In Apple fuelled haze, Nintendo went on a marketing blitz and began to do something they haven't done since the era of Super Nintendo; they ran commercials that targeted everyone including your dear old Grand Pappy.

Gimmicky as the Wiimote may seem in retrospect, Nintendo grabbed the attention of the media and consumer wallets with its technology and Wii Sports. Not since the SNES has a system been so ready to play out of the box. It's that type of mass market acceptance that the other game companies would love to have.

On the outside to the hardcore set, it seems...

285w ago - A recent [Register or Login to view links] of over 1,100 British men found that most of them preferred video games over sex.

Wait, what? Thankfully this study was of PS3 owners, that means Xbox 360, Wii and PC gamers still have some of their dignity intact.

To quote: 1 in 3 British men would prefer to play video games than sleep with their partner, with 72% claiming they'd shun their missus for the night to play a new release.

From a study of 1,130 British men, of those in relationships, 32% that said they would prefer to play video games gave reasons ranging from their "partner being hard to please" to the prospect being "not as much fun" as gaming.

Sony: MAG is Only Possible on PS3, an Iteration of SOCOM

285w ago - SCEA hardware marketing boss John Koller has claimed that upcoming multiplayer shooter MAG can only be built on PS3.

"MAG is a 256 online-player game which is spectacular," he said, talking to VG247 at GDC last week.

"If you look at that competitively, it's something that's only possible on PS3. The processor speed, the ability of PS3 to showcase 256 players at any given time, and their actions."

Koller went on to detail the Zipper Interactive game's concept.

"It's basically like an iteration of SOCOM, where you're maybe commanding the SEALs, and someone else has the Rangers, and the Green Berets, and so on," he said.

MAG was Sony's "big" announcement at the end of its 2008 E3 press conference. A movie was shown of the title, featuring soldiers, vehicles and lots and lots of guns.

It's planned for release late this year.

Sony: Support the PlayStation Portable Better in the Rest of 2009

285w ago - According to reports, the PSP is showing [Register or Login to view links] for Sony over previous years.

In Q1 of 2009, PSP hardware sales are up 75% from last year and software sales are up over 20%. Despite this growth, many are worried as it's yet to catch up to PS3 or even PS2's formidable numbers.

Huh... That's kinda weird. Like myself, you've probably noticed that when you visit your favorite retailer, the PSP section has been getting smaller and smaller.

This appears to be the result of the PSP's candle burning at both ends. On the one hand, retailers are devoting less space to the PSP in favor of more popular products. On the other hand, developers are complaining about the level of difficulty in programming games for the device, especially when dealing with the UMD format. For most, it's just not worth the hassle.

However, 2008 showed a spectacular increase in business through digital distribution. Seeing this, Sony's announced great plans for expanding their PlayStation Store. Many developers, such as Capcom, have also [Register or Login to view links] in taking advantage of this...
