318w ago - Since late yesterday GamePolitics has been following a rumor that hackers had discovered a means to reveal the original, unedited content of Manhunt 2.
Now we've had confirmation from a Take Two representative that it's not a rumor. It's true.
In other words, the apparent hack made visible some - but apparently far from all - of the content found in the version of the game rated "Adults Only" by the ESRB.
Here is the statement just sent to GamePolitics:
Multiple edits were made to revise Manhunt 2 for its M-rated version.
Hackers apparently have altered one of those edits to produce an illegally modified version of the game that can only be played on an unauthorized, modified PlayStation Portable handheld system.
All of the game material, and especially these specific edits, was submitted to and reviewed by the ESRB in accordance with requirements regarding disclosure that were enacted two years ago and any contrary suggestion is inaccurate and irresponsible.
Take-Two Chairman Strauss Zelnick said, "I stand behind the game and the ESRB ratings process. It is unfortunately the case that no one in the entertainment software industry is immune from hacking. We hope that consumers will not engage in hacking or download illegally modified...
318w ago - How long does it take to make a game? How long's a piece of string? There's obviously no simple answer because every new hardware generation brings greater expectations and puts more demands on developers. However, most would agree that a decade to make a game is a bit excessive.
So here's a celebration - or should we call it a mockery? - of games that went a little over their original release dates, not to mention budgets. Were they worth the wait? Let us know in the comments field at the bottom of the page.
Prey (3D Realms, 1995 - 2006)
To be fair to 3D Realms it was grand ambition rather than bad management that was to be Prey's undoing. The game was first announced back in 1995 with Tom Hall (of id software and Ion Storm fame) heading the project. However, after a year Hall left the company and the project was passed over to Paul Schuytema. While Schuytema kept the alien abduction theme he introduced a wildly ambitious (at least for its time) portal dynamic that allowed players to teleport around levels. These 'space rip' features were demoed to great accalim at E3 in both 1997 and 1998 but technical problems with the engine saw the game stutter to an embarrassing halt.
After much tweaking and re-writing the game was eventually resurrected in 2001 when more potent technology...

318w ago - Every lifestyle group has its own place in the virtual world "Second Life" – including, apparently, pedophiles.
Britain's Sky News TV channel on Tuesday uncovered a virtual playground hidden away behind a strip mall in "Second Life" – a playground where little girls who looked about 10 years old offered the Sky reporter's avatar, or virtual representative, a variety of sex acts.

Sky reported the playground, called "Wonderland" in possible reference to an Internet child-porn ring broken up in 1998, to British authorities.
But Linden Lab, the San Francisco-based creator and operator of "Second Life," doesn't plan to take any action for now against the non-age-specific sex playground.
It seems that everyone in Wonderland says they're over 18, despite the much younger-looking avatars of some members.

318w ago - Mike Bilder, studio head behind Stranglehold, thinks developing first on PS3 and subsequently on Xbox 360 would avoid the delays and frame rate issues of the former without compromising the quality of the latter.
Getting code "game-ready" for PS3 is more difficult than either Xbox 360 or PC says Bilder in an interview with Gamasutra. The statement affirms a previous admission made by Sony in August.
"If your game starts on Xbox 360 you will have to re-engineer aspects of the game to run properly on PS3. This means additional effort," Sony told us.
The solution, according to Bilder, is to first develop on PS3, then port to Xbox and PC without any loss in quality.
"With the PS3 and the 360, it's certainly more of a level playing field, so I don't think it's necessarily a negative to put the PS3 first. But it does help mitigate some of that risk in frame rate, memory, technology, just the hardware differences."
Many third-party PS3 games have so far been plagued with frame rate issues and irregular delays when compared to their Xbox 360 and PC counterparts. To combat this, Sony has extended its own internal resources to partner developers.
