PS3 'Pick N Mix' deal is no deal at all

100°
362w ago - For UK-based gaming fans not yet swayed by the considerable lure of Sony's PlayStation 3 console, a brand new hardware and software bundle might yet be the catalyst for change - not least in established Xbox followers unwilling to share their platform allegiance in light of Sony's upper tier pricing.

Specifically, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) has this week rolled the covers off what appears (at first glance) to be a rather tempting 'Pick N Mix' retail deal that will see UK consumers able to snaffle the PlayStation 3 and two games for a total price of £349.99 GBP.

While that might not seem like much of a deal, its worth becomes somewhat clearer when factoring in that the games on offer are first-party titles, not shoehorned third-party also-rans bundled in for little more reason than shifting dusty and unwanted stock.

Sony says the offer will launch this coming Friday (January 18) and will run until further notice, with the games open for selection being as follows: Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, Formula 1, Lair, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, and SingStar PS3 (with microphone peripherals), Motorstorm, Resistance: Fall of Man, Folklore, Warhawk (with accompanying headset, and Genji: Days of the Blade.

However, The current (Amazon) GBP price of...

Halo Now Playable on PS3: Via UT3

50°
362w ago - In an odd turn of events for non-PS3 games making their way to the console, the Halo map "Wizard" is now playable in Unreal Tournament 3. Should this awaken Microsoft lawyers? We hope not.

The beauty of Unreal Tournament 3 is that the PC community can create maps for PS3 owners to play. It's such a revolutionary setup for consoles, that you're really getting a lot of bang for your buck with this insane multiplayer experience.

Now a Halo map has been created from scratch for the game:

This is a remake of the Halo map named Wizard. This was a great close quarters map and I felt it would be right at home with Unreal Tournament 3.

This also has full bot pathing so you can play singleplayer without having to find a server with someone hosting this map.

Enjoy the screenshots below, but most importantly enjoy this new map, which can be found here. More screenshots can be seen at the link at the top of this story!

Blu-ray vs. HD DVD: What's Next?

50°
362w ago - This should be the final year for the high-def format war.. So, what's next?

After Warner Bros.' endorsement of Blu-ray shortly before the Consumer Electronics Show, many analysts have said Blu-ray will be the ultimate winner in its high-def disc format war against HD DVD.

But how much longer will the war go on? And, what will happen before it comes to an end -- assuming that it does?

Here's my prediction for what's likely to transpire in the high-def format war in 2008:

1.The HD DVD Surge
Toshiba said today that it will slash prices on HD DVD players and expand its marketing campaign. Clearly, the format's leading supporter is trying to show the studios and other industry players that it's still a competitive battle.

However, in part because of the negative press from CES (thanks to Warner Bros), relatively few consumers will bite on the lower prices due to fears that they will purchase a soon-to-be obsolete format.

2. Toshiba & Sony Will Begin Peace Talks
While awaiting sales results from the first quarter, Toshiba and Sony (Blu-ray's leading supporter) will begin informal negotiations for establishing a single format. With five major studios behind it (compared to HD DVD's two), Sony has the leverage here, but it wants to bring this battle...

US porn studio and HD-DVD camp in divorce row

50°
362w ago - It's one blow after another for the Toshiba-lead HD-DVD consortium. This time round, it's California-based Digital Playground Inc. turning its back against the red camp.

A recent statement released by the pornographic movie studio indicated a possible Blu-ray switch by end 2008. This was revealed in an interview between the company founder and a German website Heise online during the AVN Adult Entertainment Expo 2008.

Among the reasons cited are the Warner coup and higher Digital Playground Blu-ray title sales volume against their equivalent HD-DVD offerings. The latter was said to be attributed to PlayStation3 gaming console's success, though it's still facing resistance from Sony on distributing pornography on Blu-ray, understandably with Walt Disney Pictures onboard. It has since worked around this issue by collaborating with independent Blu-ray disc manufacturers.

New DMC4 Screens Reveal New Boss

50°
362w ago - Famitsu has posted some new screens for the upcoming Devil May Cry 4 that reveal a new boss character. We're not sure what his name is, but he's really, really large and looks to be made of some kind of stone.

Some of the screenshots seem extremely reminiscent of the Colossus of Rhodes battle in God of War 2. However, whether the actual gameplay of the battle is the same remains to be seen.

I have to say I'm really digging Dante's suitcase cum automatic weapon. I really need to get one of those, it would come in quite handy for clearing the way at crowded conventions.
